HI, someone ran over my kite today - not his fault - but left a couple of tears. Does anyone have any tips about repairing it, or a place that does the repair?

Kite-Fix, do it yourself.
If its just cuts in the canopy, Kite-Fix is fast, as strong or even stronger than sewing (no holes punched in the kite by a needle), kite can be fixed and then flown a couple of hours later!!

http://www.kitepower.com.au/kitefix-mini-kit.html

Instructional videos here
www.kitefix.com/kiteboarding-repair-video.html

Everyone that kites should have some of this glue and the kit, or you can just use plasterboard jointing mesh tape and the glue, as thats all the Kite-Fix mesh tap is.

Clean the cloth first with plain water or alchohol wipes, let it all dry properly and completely, tape the cuts together from the outside of the kite, turn it over and apply the mesh tape and then the glue. The glue dries in 15-20 mins! You can use your kite in 2 hrs.

To Kitepower Australia:

Is it safe to clean kite LE's, struts and canopies with acetone before repair?

Is contact cement safe to use here also?

Thanks.

... just wondering, I've noticed that the new North material (2012 D2 stuff) is hard to get the stickyback sail cloth to stick too, or, to stay on for a while. With this in mind, do you know if the kitefix stuff works on the North material, I know its hard to say if you haven't done any repairs yet, but I wouldn't mind finding out?

cheers,

Robbie

Neither myself or anyone who has gone to Lindsay has ever had a problem, last time I had the kite back the next day with no problems.

I had a kite run over by a mate while racing. The end result was a kite that looked like 3 peices of rag. There were multiple tears, the leading edge was ripped in half, one of the outer line attachment points were completely ripped off. I didnt think it could possibly be fixed. Kitepower sent it to Moti Levi and after about $400 it came back like new. It was amazing the job they did. I wouldnt go anywhere else

Keep acetone well away from kites would be my advice, its been linked as a cause of cancer in humans, and I think it could strip or damage the clear polyurethane coatings that seal the kite canopy and make it impervious to air.

Just use fresh water or even better alcohol, which dries away rapidly. I would also not use contact adhesive, most if not all of them are not waterproof.

I have done repairs to a couple of so called d2 cloth kites. (D2 is a marketing gimmick, double thread ripstop has been around in sailcloth for many years at least a decade or more)
The D2 cloth like all Teijin cloth has a silicone based surface treatment to repel dust and water, it wears away with use.
If you want to make repair tapes stick use alcohol or automotive "prep sol" to clean the surface and remove the silicon coating, prior to applying stickyback repair tapes or Kite-Fix.
