i stay upwind NO PROBLEMS and in a way i think i am going backwards..

at the point, northside woodies i could not go any further upwind otherwise id hit the rocks...

so i get out of the water and start walking downwind... passing everyone walking back up to the point
my friends think i am nuts becasue im walking downwind so i can tack back upwind and so on and so on...

they gave me a few tips on how to go down wind but i JUST cant do it

well except for when there isnt enough wind or im overpowered... but i cant do it when i want to do it

and sorry to everyone for hogging the nice flatwater near the rocks[}:)]

and THOMMO BOY when you are floating in the water NEXT and see me heading towards you... dont think im going to pay you back by cruising past and spraying you... id just duck if i were you!!

Do tricks, that seemes to work for everyone i know. Some people get to a level of experience were they get too impatient and would rather go fast, downwind and do tricks everyrun than slow and upwind and only occasional tricks.

Fly aggresive, go hard, do a couple of loops. The kite will pull you down wind,

Flat plane your board. Instead of riding an edge of the board, stand upright and ride the whole face of the board. Unless you are looping the kite whilst falt planing, its pretty hard to plane directly downwind....i hope that makes sense.
Otherwise just keep jumping!

Try doing some "S turns" keep the kite in the same place and move your weight over the board and press down with your toes. This will cause you to point a bit downwind towards the kite, and the lines will go slack. Then move you weight back onto your heels and lean back. This will make your heelside edge dig in and go back upwind.

Try to do it smoothly and get the s longer and longer, not cutting back up wind so much and you can cruise downwind. The faster you go the more you will have to fly the kite as the lines go slack. You can sort of keep your weight on the back foot and just roll the board from side to side.

hi NN

as others have said. more jumps is one way, but if u didnt want to jump on the inside at woodies which can be v shallow you could try a nice wide carvey gybe onto your toeside with or without a downloop. that usually eats up the 'ground' youve gained on the way out, oh yeah, and they feel awesome too on the super flat stuff

hahahahahah oh someone is a secret gay
hahahahhahaha you choc licker lol
hahahhahahaha
your prob over powered just stand up but keeps a little weight in your back just ever so little then
just be like your standing on the ground with the kite in the air, its really just feet flat so the board is flat on the water this will send you down wind. after a second or so at first it feels like your going faster but it really washes the power and speed off. then just dig in with the heel again like normal and off you go its a great way to wash of speed and go down wind also relaxs your muscles for a bit you will be sweet or are sweet im not really sure I would have to lick you like a lolly pop to be sure I spose hahaha just kidding least im not gay not that thats a bad thing

hmmmm
thanks to all for the tips... im not that good at kiting so am limited to the number of things i can do to try to go downwind...
will definately put more of an effort into trying next time im out on the water... i kinda get a bit scared sometimes with the speed and play it a bit too safe out there i think...
the guys i usually kite with know that im limited with what i can do so are kind enough to scoot around me...
darren i am definately interested in doing the next clinic have heard lots about it.... so count me in...
will try all these tips next time im out and they'd better work... the only time i do kiteloops though is when a jump goes wrong and it happens by accident and it all ends up quite messy.... but it does work to get me downwind

na i dont care, i like it that way, makes his posts enjoyable to read other than the standard run of the mill posts

keep it up nutty prof

and for the topic- try riding toeside or unhooking, or both. doing that makes i hard too keep up wind. If all else fails unhook, two hands one side of the bar and watch everything fly past.

Any one else game to ask for advice on technique?

Don't blame you!

All the answers to going down wind are there.

'S' turns.
healside carves (practice these in quick succession)
flatten board.
Jumps.
catch any little wave.

and practice, practice, practice and look where you want to go.

best winds

I’m sorry Guys. If you could outline what is acceptable please and what I am aloud to say. No I mean really
Would I be right in thinking that the correct thing to do would be to directly attack others I mean a bit of sledging is one thing but I am sure that if I was to really have a go personally that would be ok huh Maybe I could be as good as you guys real soon.
Im also thinking that if I get in on a good old gang up that’s really what’s best to do Id really show how intelligent I am

Good one guys keep up the good work! Stars for all of you maybe even a sticker or what about a stamp on your hand.

Cant believe I have been so stupid what was I thinking.

a very big hand of thanks to

Hi Kim,
I understand your plight, I couldn't go downwind until last year. And don't let them tell you you're a freak, it's not that uncommon! I know a few others who have had the same problem.
All the tips are true yet you might still have trouble understanding how to put them into practice, when you've been desperately edging for the last year it's difficult to visualise what flattening the board actually is.
How I learnt to go downwind? I went down to Peli Point one avo and I didn't feel like jumping so just cruised along. As usual I went further and further upwind, past all the windsurfers, past Jo-Jo's cafe, approaching Tawarri and suddenly realised I had to get back somehow before I ended up at Melville!
Point being, go kite somewhere where you can't walk back downwind, it will force you to work out a way to go downwind, whether it's S-carves, flat board, jumps or whatever. Pengo's would also be good for this.
Tip for flattening the board and running off downwind; keep the kite high. Also two advantages of being able to go downwind; it teaches you toeside and is also a prerequisite for getting out into the waves. These were both added incentives for me to learn going downwind.
All the best,
Jess
