Just a small suspicion that Saffer might have tried it - or in fact made the video.
Lots of people use the technique baggsy, do you have any specific questions?

Yeah, thats the one I made.

Obviously first prize is to have someone doing it for you, but if you are forced to self launch and land it is very effective way to do it.

The technique is not limited to sandbags, I've heard of people using various other objects like dog anchors, tow bars so its pretty much whatever you can find or have available, but you need to make sure its solid enough to hold the kite.

Only thing to remember with this is it may not work with all kites, so try it first because some sle's/bows fall onto their leading edge and then sandbag won't hold it. Once you know it works, I'd also suggest testing it in the upper end of the wind range with someone holding the leash so you know what the limits of your deadweight is because you don't want to come in a bit overpowered and suddenly find you're stuck.

I use a different technique for my RRD Hyper Type.

For launch:
1. Place kite face-down, in normal parked position
2. Arrange lines out across the wind but make sure that they clear the back edge of the kite
3. Pick up bar and hook in
4. Step back and put tension on the lines. The kite will roll onto its side and launch.

For landing:
1. Depower and fly kite to the ground at the edge of the window, like in the video.
2. Let go of the bar.
3. Grab the front line and reel it in until you get to the fork.
4. Grab the 'upper' front line (the kite is on its side) and give it a sharp tug. The kite will collapse face down onto the ground in the normal parked position.

Both techniques work very well however the landing one is a bit scary because you are putting your hands in the lines. These kites seem to be fairly docile under front line tension but I don't know all the facts so can't say how safe this really is. Also I don't know if other bow/hybrid/sle kites will behave the same.

I found that this technique works better with full bow designs.
- one where you depower the kite fully and let go of the bar, walking towards the kite while holding on to the lines.

For Hybrid SLEs, I find that some of they still have a bit of pull after you depower them fully. So using sandbags or some weight would be essential..
