On a serious note, I know southerlys are generally unpredictable but the wind on Saturday was almost twice the predicted speed!!!! Could be a real issue for a beginner whose site assessment is based on picking out the wind speed from the forecast

I was in Newcastle Saturday, was it that powerful here in Sydney? In Newcastle, didn't seem to be more than 20 knots.

Sydney got very windy - up to 37knots. A few of us got caught out on 13m and 11m kites with raceboard a long way from home. It was an interesting downwinder to say the least!

Using all the models and data they can accurately forecast the weather for one hour ahead but it takes 3 hours to work out.

Haha!

This is interesting ... how far we've come in such a short time...

www.seabreeze.com.au/Articles/Miscellaneous/A-history-of-weather-discovery_1216853.aspx

From 2009:
A $30 million, four-year project to create Australia's biggest weather computer is underway.

The new supercomputing system, being built for the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) and Australian National University (ANU), will make weather predictions more accurate.

The BOM machine will have the capacity to make about 1.5 trillion complex weather calculations a second as it crunches through weather data from around the country

funny thing is computers cant read or tell the weather, we need weather stations every 5kms for computers to collect data then maybe predictions will be more accurate
