So anyway the twenty first is still the go for it all to happen- sorry for those who are heading to the wake boarding comp. Depending on conditions the time to leave and the actual distance of the run may change. I will leave my mobile number on this thread in the days leading up so people can call and check details and then pass it on. I am also pretty keen to do the right thing as far as the no fly zone- we as a sport do not need any bad publicity so following the rules is always a good thing. I am currently checking into this. The whole idea is to get everyone together and have a good time. Beer and barbie sponsors are being chased up- if you know anyone who might like to help out let me know. The media will be notified, if there are enough kites it will look unreal as they make their way along the coast. Any more suggestions or feedback I would love to hear it- take care and have fun !!!

If all goes well the next project is a pub crawl- never a dull moment with cheap beer !!!!

I am not sure if that is the nug whos parents were treated to a preview of my ass, but I think that wet t shirt contests and the like are degrading to women - they objectify them and are demeaning to their intelligence. In all honesty I am really hoping that we may have a few ladies joining in the downwinder. Their presence would be a breath of fresh air in a male dominated scene. Hope to see you all on the day !!!!

I hope you are all starting to get pumped- still waiting for people to volunteer beer and meat for the barbie. Not long to go now. The only offer I have had so far involved Guster, vulcanised rubber, tequila and peeled grapes- not cool. So anyway if you know anybody who can help out- if you have a spare seat in your car or need people to help you get to the starting point post it and hopefully we can get a solid turn out. SWEET.

The story at the moment goes as follows:
-currently organising a couple of cars to roam the coast and pick up anyone whos gear breaks or has to come in for whatever reason.
-organising for video cameras and cameras to be on the end of each jetty we pass, so we can document it all.
-keeping a keen eye on the wind forecasts.
-organising a jet ski and boat.
-getting sponsors for beer and meat and softies.
What you need to do:
-if you know somebody who can help or want to help with any of the above, let me know !!
-spread the word, I know it is the age of the internet but some people don't have it. If you are stoked at the thought of everyone getting together and riding make sure everyone knows about it.
-if you are coming make sure you are confident in your abilities and wont pose a danger to other kiters or the general public. With the amount of kites that could turn up there may be some pretty heavy traffic, just take it easy.

Cheers and beers all !!!

I have heard or read somewhere that one needs to have saksa membership and be wearing a tag when kiting around adelaide or certain beaches.
I've just moved back to SA but don't plan on frequenting metro beaches, however, if i were to take part in this event would i need to become a member??

The City of Port Adelaide Enfield requires SAKSA membership and tag displayed at Largs Bay and North Haven, and has banned wind powered sports from all other beaches in the council area (southern boundary Bower Road).

Its generally agreed (strongly recommended / required for some events) that kite boarders should be a member of an association that carries 3rd party insurance.

Hey hey all- the wind forecast is looking promising for a start at between 12 and 1 on sunday, let's hope it all comes true as seabreeze predicts !!!! Hopefully you have all spread the word and we can get a large number of kites along on the day, the more kites the better the spectacle. My mobile number is 0418 828 603 and if anybody has any questions feel free to contact me ! Take it easy and hopefully I will see you all sunday.

Collin,

You should still attend on Sunday even if you do not have SAKSA membership. There will be a number of people taking part that do not have membership as yet (such as myself) and at the current point in time it is only necessary for a few beach around Adelaide. Im not saying its not a good idea to get it, i actually intend on joining but just have not got round to it yet.

Hope that helps.

Well all the day is almost here- due to the strong winds forecast we will start from Henley as the 25km from Seacliff to Bower Rd may be a little much in these conditions especially with a very southerly wind expected. So meeting point will be just inside the Torrens outlet at the south end of the esplanade at henley beach at 12 midday on Sunday. We will be coming in at Bower Rd at Semaphore and will have beers and a barbie. Thanks to Chris Jordan and Boltons Kawasaki for supplying us with a three seater jet ski to take care of and cheers to Pete at Onboard for ponying up some beers and meat. The goal on Sunday is to have fun, meet new people and portray the sport in a positive light. Please if you are coming along there are no prizes for pulling kite loop back rolls to blind with a handle pass two metres from shore. Ride within your limits and come for as cruise with a lot of people who get a stoke from the same thing we all love !!! If you read this please post a reply if you are coming so I can get a better idea of numbers. Se you there !!!!!

I am planning to be there - hope the forecast doesn't get any stronger, my smallest kite is a 10.

It looks like being a "Broad Reach", but that doesn't roll off the tongue like "Down Winder".

The negotiations for clearance through the no fly zone stalled and without the go ahead I am not prepared to break the rules- once again for the good of the sport we can not be seen as irresponsible.
cheers all !!!!

Should be there, although 23 degrees and a 20+ southerly is making me think i will have to pull my moldy steamer out of its summer storage...

I am on my way to pick up beer and meat right now- the weather is not looking the absolute best but at least we know there will be wind. There will be a Nobile flag at the South end of the esplanade on the beach at henley to mark a starting point. Meet there at twelve and kit up then all getting underway between 12:30 and 1. The jet ski will follow us to help anyone who needs it photos will be taken at the start and finish and from the jetties inbetween. We will be finishing at Bower Rd at Semaphore for a beer and a snag. Please pass the word around because alot of people this year will give us a good showing to get more sponsorship for next year and to make this an annual event - once again thanks to all those who have helped me out and all those who have showed so much enthusiasm. See you all tomorrow!!!!!
PS. Need more info, 0418 828 603 Cheers.

I've just checked out the lastest BOM forecasts for tomorrow, looks like it's going to be bloody windy early to mid arvo. It is then supposed to be easing to around 20 knots mid arvo. The wind will be up around 30-40 knots early then easing to around twenty., I reckon it might be better to leave it until one or there abouts to let the wind ease up a bit. Also to allow me a bit more time to get back from goolwa with the jet ski!!! got it at home now, too bad the weather is **** otherwise id take it for a hoot!!!
I should be there with the ski by 12.30. dont panic if im not geoff. i wont be far away!!

Well the weather was average and it all looked pretty gnarly but once we were on the water it was really comfortable and fun. Thanks to all who came down- I had a good day, hope everyone else enjoyed it. Thanks to Chris for the jetski, Ross for the photos, Kev for cooking the barbie, Boltons for the use of the jetski, Onboard for the meat and beers and all those who braved a cold grey day to come for a ride. Hopefully we can do it all again soon !!!!!

I was on they way back from a friend's Sunday and tracked you guys all the way up to Semaphore, stopping off occassionally to watch you go by. A good thing Chris brought the jetski - it looked you needed it a few times to pick up stranded boards, etc. Looked like the wind eased too just in time, according to BoM it was gusting to 30 knots at 12pm, but by 1.30pm gusts had eased to 25 knots.

It was certainly great to watch... and I don't kitesurf!

Hey,

Went down yesterday and the site of all the kites going down wind along Henley esplanade and beyond was fantastic with plenty of adverage beach goers commenting ...

Of note were comments regarding responsible individuals just having fun and thgose regarding safety (Jet Ski)... Well done to all! certainly think the event gave the sport a good showing and can not help but assist our reputation and acceptedness.

Spewin bout the weather though ... ruled out people like me who are just starting out and lack the confidence to venture out in such conditions..

Anyway Well Done Aagain I will make sure I am up to speed for the next one.

damn right it was a good day. and to all those snoozers who went kiting somewhere else and didnt bother coming down, pull your heads in. adelaide is too small a place to become all clicky. geoff put in a ****load of hard work and lots of people busted their balls to get this going right and legally. we need to raise the profile of this sport, otherwise it will get banned and there will be nowhere to kite or have kiting schools!!!
we didnt really need the ski in the end but it is always nice for the relative newbies to the sport know that there is help if they need it. im happy to supply the ski anytime you need it geoff.
once again geoff, bloody good job.
and if anyone has photos of the day, if they could send them to me at [email protected] that would be great. if anyone took any off me on the jetski i wouldnt mind those as well so i could stick them up in the shop.
hopefully we can make this a annual thing and more and more coverage and kiters coming along. it makes a great day and gets everone together!!!

I have posted the photos at http://www.akfa.net/information/dwind.htm

There were 180 photos on the CD, but that included some double-ups and out of focus shots. I have selected 40 of the best for the Website. Like the kite boarders, the photographers did a good job in trying conditions - moving targets, a long way away in poor light.

I had a great time, and I'm sure there are heaps of guys and girls that will join in (on a better day) for the next one.
