pantenius asked for a survey. probably because boats 1971.
Ive NEVER had insurance, ever. Never made a claim, never had an accident. Lived abroad and about 10plus years and galavanted around the globe for 20 years with nil insurance. People think youre mad. I reckon lack of insurance keeps you careful.
I did get travel insurance once in 94 and needed to make a claim. the company refused to pay out. Recently i had vehicle insurance and the engine blew. Didnt cover that either. So i figure whats the bloody point. its a hassle and these companies employ people to find reasons not to pay. Insurance to me is like banking. its virtual money , it doesnt exist. its a dollar value with more dollars added to it out of the ether. Im really not a fan. Ive had a guy survey a boat once. turned up with a tape measure and did a super fast job. He didnt really do anything. just turned up for the cash. its all bits of paper. I hear so many stories of people who pay for surveys, get them done only for the surveyor to miss alot of things. At least they got their bit of paper though for their insurance companies. Back scratching BS. If the NRMA are allowed to have says in what laws can be passed that help their business , i dont want no part of it. Ive always been self insured. Always worked for me.

Sad to announce that I signed up for Pantaenius and then was told that the cover was subject to providing a survey and mooring report in the next 45 days.

Thats a shame. Good thing about tudor is they were no bs. Quick call a few questions and they said theyll call back once they speak to underwriters. Took em a few days to get back but thats ok.
Pantenius told me they would want a survey. Did you pay?

Been with Club Marine for years without a claim so can't comment on service other than they're good at taking my money .

Called Youi for a quote and bugger me they're tricky!

So other than being 3 times more than Club Marine ($765 with Club Marine, just over $2k with Youi), they had a lot of 'hidden T&C's':

- $1k additional excess if you're boat's damaged in the first 3 months regardless of who (or what's) at fault.
- $1k additional excess if someone else is at the helm, regardless of who or what's at fault.
- $1k additional excess if you use a different car that wasn't the registered car that's going to tow the boat.

Boat's value is determined at time of valuation, not agreed, even though you agree to market value.

I questioned this point and was told even if it's burned to the ground their 'skilled' assessors will be able to give you an appropriate value.

Yeah I paid.

I sought further clarification and they said that if I fail to do the survey within 45 days my policy will not be void. Its just that I risk exposure that if something happens and the boat sinks due to something that a surveyor should have picked up (skin fitting failure etc) then I may not be covered. But if its a collision etc then I would probably be fine.

Having said that I do need to haul this boat out of the water anyway, it hasnt been anti-fouled in many years and I need to have some fittings installed for a proper toilet. So I guess I will get it all done now so I have an uninterrupted spring/summer/autumn to look forward to.

pretty rubbish this wasnt made clear in the initial correspondance?
The only reason I hate insurance companies is because of their blatant bull****ting - stuff like this. It seems that now, if anything does happen to you they have a reason to not come through. Its all a big ? My only interest in getting insurance was for QLD marinas and boatyards but also for 3rd party. Ill be interested to hear what they say when i move the boat to Jervis in December/Jan. I got a feeling that it will be ok. Good thing about Tudor is that that told me all the things that the underwriters werent keen on. Ie boats being in the cyclone areas in that season. Makes sense. I dont wanna be there eithe rin the cyclone season.

Hi there, first post.
initial post, BJR wants 3 party insurance for a boat worth $4500 and asks the question, which insurance company will cover my boat. he's been given a few options ranging from $180 to around $1500, that's a start but still speculative.

I'm in a similar situation, so thanks for the information.
(What I require is yard cover and people cover).

try this -------

The cost of such a policy should be inclusive with the vessels registration, for compulsory vehicle cover it costs around $120 dollars a year so for a boat, being far less of a liability I would imagine around $60 to $70 would be in the ball park for a recreational vessel, sailboat / motor boat.
So to add full comprehensive property damage as with a car you go to one of the other tyrants and purchase the relevant policy to cover the pride and joy.

I ran this proposal past MAST, the TAS boat registration department last year and received a relatively negative response, therefor I assume that my proposal was dead in the water.

do you think that this idea has merit or not?

If so its time to lobby

I've just done the ctp calculator for a bog standard corolla and it come out between 550 and 900 bucks. That's more than I pay for third party and comp on my boat.

Probably rather the government didn't take it over

Cheers

lets relinquish more freedoms is what your saying. CTP is if you injure someone and in my view its a scam. Its got nothing to do with 3rd party property.

Welcome naggy, ctp is as pointed out for third party personal injury only. That being said you have a very relevant point, I pay $350 pa to comprehensive insure a vehicle for $12k and the only offer I could get to cover my vessel was 3rd party property/ public liability at $878 ! It's nonsense !
The big issue for insurers is in NSW at least is the stupid private mooring licence, that incourages old **** boats to be used as mooring minders, ie you have to have a boat on your mooring and it has to be registered in your name. So there's lots of unloved boats just marking time until the dream boat is acquired or the licence holder falls of the perch. Lots of mooring fields are trouble waiting to happen! How could you insure such a mess ?
Are the mooring provisions the same in other states ?????
Or is it legal elsewhere to park another boat on mooring # BS 007 ?
Naggy you might be opening Pandora's box here, can you imagine hauling out every year for a rego inspection ? Like we have with motor vehicles in NSW !

I think the mooring minder idea is selfish and unethical. The boat I bought was used as one by some rich eastern suburbs pig. He's had mooring minders on his rose bay mooring for over 10 years. It took 3 months to get my mooring in the harbour the legit way on the waiting list. In Woodford bay there are a lot of mooring minders. I'll be giving up my mooring when I leave for qld Although maritime will let me have it vacant for 6 months. In my view moorings aren't hard to get therefore mooring minders aren't needed. humans feel the need to "own, have, be safe" It's rife in Sydney.

Thanks for that WOKO,

Mostly I think insurance is intended to be a complicated beast and I have no intention of adding to the complexity,
thanks again for the insurance info mentioned at the start of the thread, give's me a good amount of options to work on,

Hello Don, thanks for the welcome, i'm in blackmans bay and my boat is in northwest bay around 5 minutes away.
Been sailing for around 8 years, on my second boat (still needs work) i'm 60+ years young and still learning ever day ways to go sailing more often.
