Hi there, first post.
initial post, BJR wants 3 party insurance for a boat worth $4500 and asks the question, which insurance company will cover my boat. he's been given a few options ranging from $180 to around $1500, that's a start but still speculative.
I'm in a similar situation, so thanks for the information.
(What I require is yard cover and people cover).
try this -------
The cost of such a policy should be inclusive with the vessels registration, for compulsory vehicle cover it costs around $120 dollars a year so for a boat, being far less of a liability I would imagine around $60 to $70 would be in the ball park for a recreational vessel, sailboat / motor boat.
So to add full comprehensive property damage as with a car you go to one of the other tyrants and purchase the relevant policy to cover the pride and joy.
I ran this proposal past MAST, the TAS boat registration department last year and received a relatively negative response, therefor I assume that my proposal was dead in the water.
do you think that this idea has merit or not?
If so its time to lobby
Welcome naggy, ctp is as pointed out for third party personal injury only. That being said you have a very relevant point, I pay $350 pa to comprehensive insure a vehicle for $12k and the only offer I could get to cover my vessel was 3rd party property/ public liability at $878 ! It's nonsense !
The big issue for insurers is in NSW at least is the stupid private mooring licence, that incourages old **** boats to be used as mooring minders, ie you have to have a boat on your mooring and it has to be registered in your name. So there's lots of unloved boats just marking time until the dream boat is acquired or the licence holder falls of the perch. Lots of mooring fields are trouble waiting to happen! How could you insure such a mess ?
Are the mooring provisions the same in other states ?????
Or is it legal elsewhere to park another boat on mooring # BS 007 ?
Naggy you might be opening Pandora's box here, can you imagine hauling out every year for a rego inspection ? Like we have with motor vehicles in NSW !
