I'm the kind of guy that doesn't do bartering. If I have something for sale, I want what I asked for - and not a cent less.

If I go and purchase something, I sincerely don't even think to knock people down. I just think: "well that's what they asked for so I'll hand it to them".

It's not like I don't know what bartering is. It's just that I keep forgetting that the concept exists. It's just that it's not ingrained in me and not a part of my way of thinking.

Anyways -- so I am noticing a lot of times with yachts, (and in discussion of pricing) people will "advise" to knock like 1/3 or even 1/2 off the asking price. This is very common, I've noticed. So, I am liable to go out and find a $30k yacht, think I got the bargain of a life time - park it in the marina, grinning like a Cheshire cat..

..and then the guy next to me will lean off his yacht and say: "Hey, I'm Ralph. Nice to meet you mate. Hey nice boat.. what did you pay for it, $5k? ..$6?".

So, um, yeah ..how can I avoid that self esteem shriveling, ego bruising, embarrassing and costly conundrum?

I was taught as a kid that you don't ask anybody who they vote for, how much they earn or what they pay for there material goods as its none of my business. Tell Ralph to sod off, .

The market is very flat at the moment and I suspect it will be for a long time. I can not see it ever recovering to what it was 5 years ago. People were tripping off to California and Mexico and bringing back yachts but now they are just as cheap here! There are very few yachts advertised on sites like yachhub that are actually for sale, yes they are advertised but not at a price that makes much sense. The tricky part is finding one that is actually for sale and making an offer. EBay is the only real indication of what a boat is worth if it gets a bid. The value of a yacht is what ever someone is prepared to pay, certainly not the asking price. I was sailing dinghies down at Jervis Bay today and chatting to a mate who owns a North shore 38 and has a Davidson 34 for sale as well. Previous winner of the Sydney Hobart. Can't sell it. Heaps of boats here for sale, no one is even getting an enquiry! If you have a pocket full of money there are some gifts going.

Keep tabs on auction sites like Grays online and the msb auctions etc.

See how you learn, ask question and known the right answer.
Sum up what you learn and Avoid The Worts Mistake.

To buy the wrong boat.
It's easy to buy but very difficult to get rid off if you realise, that's not what I won't to do with the boat.
Before you start looking, must have clear picture what you after.
Nothing to do length or money you pay.
For instance, boat require crew because of rigging, size of the sails or the keel type / directional stability/.
It is large enough to store the dingy and instal radar. It is small enough to handle single person.
Is it set up for offshore, / handle 40 plus knots wind /.
In this stage choosing the boat, have to be more specific. Specify what is your vision now,
buy small boat..learn..or capable than dress up as U go.
Sure we can guide you to avoid big disappointment .

So Len , did you contact parks Vic about moorings ? And if so what was the verdict , any good spots around Vic seeing it's your home state . Or if you intend going north are there any good spots in that vicinity ?

Oh yeah , my advice is don't sail a concrete boat off shore , if you hit a floating object the chances of holeing her are far greater than plastic . IMHO !!!!

I have not looked up Victoria, because I have no intention of owning a yacht on Victoria.

I have contacted roads and maritime in NSW and have received a email response, but that was just to tell me the email is being transferred to another department. I have been looking into QLD moorings, but haven't made any contact yet. However, the Queensland maritime website seems to be easier to follow and understand. I can't find an email, so I ma going to have to call them during office hours.

So, in short -- all my research in that department is inconclusive. However, I have made many inquiries about pulling a boat out of the water (in which case I obviously wouldn't need to pay for mooring). I am in discussion with a couple of people/companies.. nothing solid yet.

I've also contacted Fiji for that matter. I have found out that there's 4 buoy moorings where I want to keep a yacht!

*I don't want to talk about the cement boat in this thread. The other one (about the cement boat) is providing more than enough hassles to deal with :)

Mate there is a free off shore morning about half way between Australia and Fiji I can give you the lat and long if your interested!
