Good watch that sydchris. Lots of nostalgia from the times.

Its obviously a good boat with very little damage considering the water it travelled through and the knockdowns. 360 to pop back up and keep going is amazing.

One of the sweetest 24 footers you'll ever find!!
Built to last by my dad, although sold before he launched her.
Great little weekender and coastal racer
Anyone who is a racer of an older vintage might remember 'Mozzie' and 'Crimper' that were gun JOG boats in their day and flush deck. Well this boat is the same hull with a cabin based around the Northshore 27!
www.boatsalestas.com.au/sail-monohulls/westerly-gk24-pania/113684/

Superb craftsmanship!

Absolutely a real credit to your dad rumble

Thanks guys!
Funny thing is he never got to sail on her till I tracked her down recently. I organized with the owners to take him out for his birthday and although we just motored around the bay as it was howling, the smile on his face was priceless. Also current owners learnt a lot, like 'all that blackwood came out of a 1850's house in Launceston, it was the mantle piece '

Wow Rumblefish, that is something special.
I wouldn't come out of that V berth, Id be lost just drinking it all in.
Kinda epitomises for me the small boat era in Oz, a perfect family weekender, can boogie still and can handle itself if it gets rough.
Thanks for the link!

Here is an interesting boat.

Toccata was discussed on this forum quite a bit in 2015.

Apparently "was designed by John King for the owner of Jarkan yachts, Mr Kanga Birtles to compete in the 1987 Melbourne to Osaka two handed yacht race, but didn't make it on time."

Since 2015 this boat has undergone a huge Lydia style refit including new mast, boom, rudder etc. The extent of the refit suggests Toccata may have needed quite a bit more work than our 2015 discussion suggested.

I wonder what would be needed to finally upgrade her for the next M2O ?

A

While I have that vessel in my saved list I would prefer to spend 1/4 of that on a boat that actually did the race.

Bruce sounds like a cranky old bloke but I reckon by the time he gets down your way that is what she will sell for.

The Ben Lexcen 37 in Tasmania appeals too!

www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/huonville/sail-boats/a-lot-of-boat/1203647627

I must be getting old - growing up is another matter - I raced against the Lexen a quarter of a century ago, It usually beat us (Holland 25) around the course... until (from memory) they decided that she drew too much and shortened the keel. After that the Holland was generally faster around the course.

That "Lexcen" ad is odd. The boat looks lovely but she the Hobart results certainly don't show her as doing Hobarts. She did a few Hobarts, including the first one I did, but she didn't do 11 of them.

It also appears in the old Hobart programmes as being designed by the builders, the Anderson brothers. They went on to build the M & W 40s by Lexcen, but that was a couple of years later. There may have been some Lexcen in the shape, but she's not like any other Lexcen. By 1971 he had designed Apollo, Volante, Tampico II, Warri and Marsude, which are all quite different around the stern.

As a 1971 designed one tonner, she should have thrashed a Holland 25 quarter tonner in all conditions!

The Westerly 24 is a real nice piece! Lots of care and love. +1

I am fond of Adams's yachts and their modern version, the Radfords. The alum or steel construction makes sense for cruising especially in coral infested waters.
Radfords are pretty good boats, Don McIntyre's Radford 50 is the proof. (thanx for the utube flick!)

The Adams 13 'Antuka' is a clean and nice boat but for 90k is a bit dear. No matter how much was spent on it, it is still a 1981 boat, and dark inside. I like the heater thou, a must for Tasmania.

The other 13, 'Friday' is a whoooa! after what was spent on it, though, it's a bit sharp for 99k being a 1998 build and no cruiser.
Neither of them has the retractable tiller, both has a balanced rudder vulnerable to the max. when daggerboard is fully up!

For that sort of money one could have this 1993 alum Radford, almost twice,
yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/radford-10-6/218679

or this, 2011, made also of alum for 90k. Both of the Radfords got a draught of 1.9 meters which is not a cruiser friendly draught.
yachthub.com/list/yachts-for-sale/used/sail-monohulls/radford-11m-performance-cruising-yacht/209510

The interior of the above mentioned Carter 37 and Jarkan 39 are my kind of modern interiors with a bit of timber for contrast but not the full timber layout, God forbid. Just thinking of the varnishing makes me scream in pain.
I remember my Adams's timber bits and l cringe. It might be beautiful but l don't like spending my time working while l should be sailing or relaxing.

Here is one for consideration for much less dough, however, one's gotta spend on it at least 20-25k to make it viable:

Antuka and Friday look good but I think we should leave Beatrice where she is.

Guy named Brian used to run a 50 ft Adams/Radford out of Bundy over to the Chesterfield Reefs and Noumea.
On the way back one time with just 2 aboard he told me he was doing 32 knots off the waves with virtual forefinger and thumb control on the tiller and huge spray waves off the bow.

An alloy yacht.

Like the look of the smaller Radford. The 1.9 metre draft makes it slightly difficult if you have to fight over slipway bookings with other yachts with equally deep drafts and they are getting more common. Looks like it has running backstays though which might limit it's appeal.

PhilY, no it was either Gordon, (+ RIP) or another guy Jim, well before that because it happened twice. I was not present, thou.

However, I was sitting next to my son when the mast broke at Pittwater. Hence the brand new mast and rig in 2016.

Cisco, what you got against Beatrice?

This one, a real shoal draught 13 - GRP not alum - with 'proper' sliding tiller not just daggerboard is the real cruiser amongst them all.
(I really don't understand the idea on the other two 13s, the daggerboard does not mix well with a balanced rudder which is hanging down well below the level of the keel-stump catching lines and coral and sundry and no way one could do with those boats what is done on the picture)

It was winning races and championships when l was crewing on it. A real easy boat to live with, narrow hull as Two Dogs pointed it out but not as small as it would be cramped for cruising. Well, it's not a Mottle ! but not small either. Unless one intended to carry a whole tribe, plenty for two+two, thou.

I love this boat, it sailed really well in all conditions.

I like Adams 35s but that one is at Langkawi, has a pretty ugly solid dodger and I suspect she may be a fair bit over the six ton mark. I have gone off steel boats also due to their high maintenance factor.

Actually it's 7, 5 tons. A cold chisel and a big hammer would take care of that monstrocity, well spotted!

You would love this blast from the past though, l am sure: A BABA 30

The trailer may be good for someone, but it weighs 700kg and has a GVM of 2000kg, so it's not going to take an Etchells at 1560kg.

In the end, I decided on this:

Survey 14 Jan then, all things being equal, antifoul, engine and saildrive service, then home to Brisbane in February.
