There has been a price reduction on this SS34. Looks like a tall rig on a Mk 1 hull. Electric motor for all you greenies!

SS34 is at the top of my list, and of course, it's locked down in Sydney! :(
Does anyone here know if the SS34 association is still running? I sent an email and got no reply.
Very nice looking S&S34. Not sure I'd want the electric drive motoring for 110 hours to and from Lord Howe Island.
I was the NSW Association rep until a few years ago. It is still going but really it was and is a WA group who race together. The previous President Simon Torvaldsen was very active but since he moved on it has been much less frequented.
If you have any questions PM me and I'll give you my phone number.
Classic timber yacht. www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/artarmon/sail-boats/classic-34-ft-pretty-hull-full-keel-yacht-to-sell-keen-vendor-/1282862456
This really should be saved. I had a look at this a couple of years ago. Romaalis is Aust registered, says built 1938.
Cutter rig with oregon or spruce mast and boom. The boom is massive with some sort of roller reefing mechanism.
It's a big job to restore and it would only be worth half your money spent, but if restored, would be a special boat.
Very solid build. I didn't see a single cracked rib. No rot seen in the planking. There is some daylight showing between a couple of planks, shipwright maintained the gaps would be closed with a good soaking. Maybe a couple could be splined. Copper fastened with clenched over nails.
I would say the price is very negotiable, as the listed price is quite a bit different to what I remember.

Repairing the deckhead beams would be a pain but doable. Not much money is required but a lot of labour. With the products available today and good hand tools and power tools this is an easy project. Just keep shipwrights away from it. If it was my boat I would sand the topsides smooth, 3 coats of White Knights oil based paving paint [straight over the bare timber]. One 4 litre tin is $100 and will easily do three coats. Antifoul it and get it back in the water. Any open seams below the waterline fill with blackjack and garden lime to make a putty. Use black antifoul in case the putty bleeds through. Keep an eye on it for a few days.
I agree, totally doable as the structure is sound. It doesn't have a cockpit, so bit of work there, as well as refinishing out below. I think the panelling is Queensland maple. The rigging and chainplates look perfect but probably need renewing for insurance.
Many original bronze fittings but also a lot replaced with stainless :-(
If someone has the time, the cost would be manageable, bit still needs engine, prop sails, running rigging and all the little expensive bits.
I'd also pull a few of the copper fasteners out to test to ensure they are not corroded or weakened.

I spent a few minutes looking at that and wondering where the 50 grand went!
definitely a bargain here!
There is one exactly the same listed on yachthub for $21,000 less.

There is on of those in my local area that the owner bought for $17,000. It was on the slips to get a full repaint but was a damn good buy.

I don't particularly like them myself but wow what a steal!

I'm going sailing for a week on one shortly. What don't you like about them?

Just that they look a bit podgy and I'm not keen on the interior layout. I didn't like the offset companionway when I looked at 1 but I can't quite remember what the issue was. Obviously the rudder off the transom has no skeg either. The rudders all leak water and have to be resealed all around the centre line where the two halves were bonded but then a lot of boats have similar rudder problems. Apparently the wheel steer versions have the steering cable pulley mounts bonded to the hull either side at the rear and the bond fails presumably whilst in heavy use which wouldn't be good. Other than that however they are supposed to be quite good boats with the North Shore reputation etcetera.
Seriously good value Lexcen 36 foot fibreglass yacht!

Interestingly in the spec sheet it says 37 feet.

ha ha, was waiting to hear the estimate of how much Metal gleam required! Now, if you could transfer the mooring location as well then it would be excellent, nice Sydney weekender.
Interesting. Don't want to nitpick but imho it is a bit of a stretch to include Lexcen in the designer role as it was Colin Crisp's (and his wife's) work - see on the 11th and 12th pages of this; articles at the time mentioned that Lexcen was asked to comment on the design drawings and did so, giving them a comment to the effect "looks good" or similar.

I bought 4 litres of Metal Gleam Thursday. $37. This boat would need a max of 1 litre!

Good boat in broad terms. Reasonably comprehensive review here assume you have seen but missing some design data. The text is well compiled.

I think it's a little expensive and the centreboard would always be at the back of my mind. For a large yacht and less than half the money you could have this. www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/minyama/sail-boats/44ft-open-ocean-cruising-yacht/1283670908
What do you good people think of this as a coastal cruiser and perhaps even further?
She appeals to me but the lack of interior photos is a concern.

Hello Mike - the E24s are well known as a strongly built boat - see prior seabreeze thread here..........if I recall right one sailed across the Pacific or further but of course top shelf sailing and preparation is needed for that. Reg Gardner and Len Hedges the builders / designers knew what they were doing. Reg went to the UK with an early boat and did well in the JOG series over there.
www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/Sailing/General/endeavour-24?page=1
Also if I recall a prior thread here the rudder was over balanced - so the rudder stock was too far aft of the leading edge of the rudder and didn't give a good feel especially sailing upwind. I had a Black Soo 30ft Van der Stadt with the same problem and angle grinded off the fibreglass and stainless steel straps fwd of the rudder stock to get the balance right and it was fine after that. But a bit of unexpected work.
The concern of lack of interior photos is easily rectified by you going to inspect the boat if you are a serious buyer.
How old is the standing rigging? Will you get comprehensive insurance?
The E26 was a lot better boat and many examples come up in this price range - albeit condition unknown and probably with an outboard.
