Morning all. Here is an update and something that concerns me (and a warning for anyone who joins Seabreeze like me and posts an ad of a Thunderbird 26 in Sydney).. I'm just finding this very very odd, with warning bells!
I thought to myself last night why has the seller of the Tbird not posted any pictures of himself/friends actually sailing the yacht. So I asked him for some pictures of himself on the yacht with sails out!! He doesn't have any despite telling me that if he was in Sydney he'd be out on the boat.. Hmmmmm. All his supplied pictures are of the yacht moored, even internal ones! The previous owner Colin sent me a whole stack of pictures with him + family/friends under sail. Current seller cannot.

I just find that off-putting and, for me at least, very concerning! As I read somewhere as well, if someone doesn't have interior pictures of their yacht in an ad, run away! There's a reason for it. This makes me want to run!
He also has the yacht registration in his wife's name, is that normal? Claims to have a 30ft yacht he stays on in Gore Creek too in his name but why register 2 yachts he owns in 2 names?
Am going to request the HIN number today, but I I should have taken a pic of that last time I was in the boat! Grrr!
Something not sitting right for me, it's very dodgy.

Update: after asking for the HIN & picture of the Rego papers the text messages from seller have stopped (may not be related to my request but the timing is odd).

So invariably this leads me to my next issue: The Hood 23 is moored somewhere around the Cottage Point area and I want it moored near me (more than likely Tarban Creek) so, what are my chances of being able to get this Hood around Barrenjoey Lighthouse and down into Sydney Harbour? Obviously on the calmest day I can plan for. I don't think a 5HP engine is going to cut it that far

Just sail it with the outboard leg out of the water. Outboards are for moving on and off moorings if you have to.

Indeed, therein lies my problem. I'll have to do some sailing lessons first!

The owner of the boat may just be thinking that with Sydney's covid lockdown and other restrictions that it may be just too hard currently to reply to every question or request,

Do boat inspections come under the current exemptions to leave home at the moment?

Not sure to be honest, I dint think it would qualify as a reason to leave home..
It's just, when compared to several other owners this one is acting very strange.. I might just be reading alot into it but let's see if the HIN/Rego papers materialise this afternoon (as promised)

Short answer is no. Leaving home now is heavily restricted.
I doubt the restrictions will be relaxed enough to allow a boat purchase for some time now. I advertised a car for sale just as the restrictions started and nobody can get near it to look at it.

tbh I think if someone was asking for photo's of me and my friends on the boat I would start to lose interest in the sale as well. I was recently in the market and most boats on Yachthub are just pictures of the boat. Why do you want pictures of the owner?

I should have rephrased the question on here, what i actually asked the owner for specifically was photos of the boat actually being sailed.. He claims to have sailed it regularly but has no pics and I would assume you'd have pictures of yourself on the boat or friends, or just photos in general of the boat being used, especially underway in sail... I'm not asking for pictures of him (that would be weird!) if that all makes sense

I'm now just being wary basically, and overly suspicious if someone lists a boat I'd like to pay the correct person

Yes I walked away from a very nice boat at a good price when the seller started to act difficult when I queried some strange things in the paperwork. However, for an old timber boat with minimal value, it is unlikely to have been "rebirthed" or something seriously shonky

Good idea you did.. I just like to be careful just in case! Seller provided the correct paperwork in the end tonight, so all good. I'm new to sailing & this forum so until I learn more about this sport, I like to post my thoughts/ideas no matter how adsurd they may be, as you all are alot more knowledgeable than I am!

Morning all, I've well and truly cancelled the sale of this boat. Surveyor took a look at the pictures I had and said there is potentially ALOT of rot taking hold, especially around the base of the mast.. Lucky I hadn't handed any money over! My search continues :)

Well done. I bet you've learned a heap with minimal loss, and you'll be much more savvy when looking at the next boat. Hasten slowly and good luck.

Cheers, Graeme
