G'day folks. I am currently renovating a Red Witch and i have found a problem... well, i have found quite a few, but one in particular that i need some help with! In the lazerette i found a small crack/hole in the forward bulkhead, right down where it meets the hull, on the centreline. I poked with my finger and quickly made the hole bigger... I found i could very easily dig out the core foam, which just crumbled away to nothing, it seems very brittle, and wet. Bad smelling water trickled out, there is now a puddle in the lazerettte (i have jacked up the trailer hitch to try to drain it out). This foam has me confused - it appears to be open cell foam, shouldn't it be closed cell? And does anyone know how far this foam extends? I know the transom is solid 'glass, as are the topsides and the aft cabin/lazerette fwd bulkhead above the aft end of the quarter berths (I drilled a couple of holes to learn this). Is this foam used throughout the bilge, i.e. the entire space between the hull and the quarter and v berths tops? If this is the case, this water ingress could well be throughout the whole boat, yeah? Any suggestions as to how far I should go chasing this? Cheers

The Red Witch was built a long time ago before people really understood foam. The open cell foam you have found would be there to provide positive buoyancy. The Red Witch is/was a trailer sailor built of solid glass with a cast iron keel, I should imagine there is enough block foam under the bunks for and aft to support the hull even when its full of water. I would be inclined to install inspection ports in all the bunk fronts and discard the foam. What you did then about positive buoyancy is then pretty much up to you but the bunks would be fine as air compartments or just fill them with milk bottles!
