Why would helmets make less people compete? I did slalom canoeing for 12 years and they were standard or you didn't get on the water. GPSs, legropes and even inflatable vests aren't necessarily gonna stop someone drowning if they get knocked out.

honestly, nothhing will ever stop people from having accidents, helmets could stop it but the last guy who got hit by a ski coped it to the face and it may seem that this guy has as well so a helmet may not do much imo, i just look at it like this at my club we just overs 300 nippers, if each one does just a swim and a board there going around the can 600 times a weekend, even more if you were to count board relays, board rescues, iron persons, seniors and masters . nippers is on for around 20 weeks a year thats 12000 times around the cans, if you just include nippers and that they do 1 swim and 1 board on a sunday morning, this doesn't include carnivals or training, if you look at the 15 other clubs in my branch and then the rest of the branches in nsw, then the rest of the states.
looking at this i think for 3 people to die in 16 years is not that bad (would be better if it was 0)

and the fact i've seen more people get injured diong beach flags that any other aspect of surf sports

But it's not at your club or any of the others. It's 3 teenage boys at the same event at the same place. That's surely reason for concern isn't it?!

it is a bit sad/unlucky that it has happened at the same place, i was more or less trying to say that consedering all the people that do these activities every week all over australia at different beaches with different conditions that for 3 people to die is a small number considering and for this to happen at the same location, i think that the aussies is a great event to go to up at kurrawa, but i do believe that it should be at another location where there are beaches on different angles so if one location is unsafe or for other reasons there are alternate locations that would have much better condtions

They are saying another young competitor had him but lost him in the surf. I really feel for everyone involved. Honestly every time i start to digest any of it i start to well up.

Simply i fell the conditions need to be smaller and more in control for the juniors events. Nothing wrong with racing in the surf as that is what makes the sport but i think a suitable level is needed..

Very sad dont know about helmets and vests but Under 18's should have to have legropes. If he was attached to his board they would have a least had the chance to undertake first aid.

and leg ropes are in hinderance when using a clubby boards. Definitely not the solution. Will make more accidents...

Marcel, not being an expert or anything, but can you explain you comments, how can, if every one has one a leg rope be a hindrance? So you gotta take it off and out it on again, we have to do that in club SUP races, we all do it, its like transition in triathalon, practice it!

And then how does it make more accidents?

I agree, if leg ropes were a hinderance and caused more accidents, then I very much doubt surfers would wear them. It's not going to stop you getting knocked out but at least you will be recovered quickly and stand a better chance of being revived. I can understand the reluctance to wear PDFs or helmets as they can be restrictive, but I hardly ever even notice I'm wearing a leg rope when I'm in the water.

they dont have juniors events for the aussies, as i understand it this kid was competing up, having a junior event might help with things as they can have it in a safer area, and kids wouldn't have to compete up an age group
