dont know what's all the fuss about noses...

looked like straight up heavy barrel conditions

paddle in early, set a line, and hope the wave is a good one and you dont get smashed. not easy by any means but.........

dont rekon the nose shape going to change too much

Not in the Dave Muir category but this is why the pointy nose gets my vote , a fatter nose would have pitched me on the take off and bogged on the bottom hand turn.

Hey Legion and Doggie what you think boys

You know me, I just don't get it. The first part kind of looks awkward and the second part there's some epic barrel dodging going on. However, the two backhand barrels are good (the pig dog and the one where he gets knocked off by the foam ball). I don't understand why you don't use the right tool for the job (i.e. a shortboard at that wave). Novelty I guess.

Having said that, their balls are bigger than mine, especially the guy who eats it on takeoff (the frame grab pictured in this thread).

All this talk of nose shape is funny. You can tell who comes from a surf background and who doesn't.

I also like tennis Log esp watching those Russian girls The pointy nose sub has a lot more advantages for a high performance sub in solid waves ( if starboard had of given Dave a gunnier board to use Im positive he would have used it) as Piros shows in his video is one reason why, another is as simple as paddleing out though heavy white water at a beachie the pointy nose punches through easier than a big old disc nose would , the same way it does taking the drop on a big wave and hitting some chop getting sucked up the face the the pointy board penetrates through where the big old dics bounces and bucks you off. Really there are so many reasons surely its obvious!

Totally agree there less is best paddling out , the fuller nose is used alot to make up for lack of volume on smaller boards but it's a bad trade off for coming back off the lip or taking late drops , they stick like mud.

Ladies and gentlemen and legion , yes I admit it inexperience is my middle name.... and not knowing anything has never stopped me having an opinion. so anyhow, piros great wave but doesn't it show a lack of nose rocker combined with a lack of nose volume. Isn't the reason the board is pearling because of the 1 foot of pointy nose. It seems to me that the JL mano design has addressed the pearling issue by making the nose rocker extreme and the later Naish boards seem to have followed . maybe if you want to have a pointy nose on a 9foot surfboard you have to have, hell I don't know 12" of nose rocker. Yours in complete ignorance...Log

With his win in Tahiti, Dave has really shown to the world outside Australia, the quality of athletes that Oz produces. Great representation Dave, both as a sportsman and as a person.

I've owned the JL Mano (narrow nose) and now the Starboard Converse (wide nose). IMO wide nose is harder to punch through waves paddling out, easier to catch the nose on steep drops and harder to nose dive. Yes you read that right they are harder to nose dive. Think about it, more volume means it's harder to push it under water. Combine that volume with a bit of concave under the nose, which gives lift and the wide nose converse is the hardest board to nose dive I have owned.

Nathan Fletchers new prone boards for XXXXL waves look to have a strangly rounded nose.....made fro extra paddle speed and getting as deep as possible in the biggest waves you can find.....
