I have'nt surf regularly since I was 20 (now approaching the big 40 - and counting). I am looking at buying a Sup for the surf. I am 6'2" and 130kg (aiming for 115kg by Xmas) and not sure which board would be suitable. Looking to surf up to 4th waves for now (and building up to Mavericks later - only kidding). What do you recommend ?

Hi Scotty
Have you had a look at the Hobie Sumo range. The Sumo disc gives big volume to a board without too much width. I am using the 9'10 as my big board but I am light.
Comes in a 10'2 and a 10'8
10'8 spec's
L: 10Œ 8 (325.1cm)
W: 30 (76.2cm)
T: 4.75 (12cm)
V: 195.01 L
Priced very well for an epoxy board

theres a few good boards out there for us big guys, you could go something like an 11'6, but there are other boards like the 10 foot naish mana, maybe a 10'5 widepoint these have alot of volume and surf pretty vell, basically just try to demo as many different boards as you can, head down to your local sup shop and just have a chat to the guys there. i am about the same as you and i was looking at getting a mana but i now have a custom dtm and i am 6'3 and 115kg but i have been supping for a while, basically just get down to your local shop and demo as many boards as you can just to get an idea of what you like

a mate of mine is the exact some size as you. He rides the naish mana 10'6, a true big mans board, about 34 inch wide and 5 and a quarter thick i think. he surfs it really well. I havent seen it in anything over 3 foot, but i assume it would handle at least 4 foot. My 2 cents

i've got a naish nalu 11'6" (230 litres) and a 10' mana (210 litres) and both are very stable in the ocean.
I find the mana so much more manageable in the surf and probably more friendly in rougher water, maybe because a couple of inches wider.
Im your height but not quite up there in kilos but I think these boards would handle extra.
Good luck with the search

I,m a old crap surfer that weighs 100kg , I have been having ball paddling and surfing a 11'6" x 32" 4 3/4 " rounded pin in small waves .
I have tried a 10' version of the same shape but it was harder to catch the waves with.
and didnt go as fast.

Agree. . But I have been known to slide along on little surf runners on 14 & 17 feet. It's a great challenge, and loads of fun.

Yes there is a good reason SB whoppers are so popular. A really good all round board in any conditions.

Hey Scotty,
Agree with Jradedmondo, the SB 10'5" widepoint is a great board for bigger blokes, at 180 something litres has plenty of float but also hides that volume well, 32 wide so is plenty stable in the chop. Good Luck.

Hi I think The 10' Naish Mana, the SB 10' Whopper and I have seen an extra wide Whopper at 10' x 36" wide. Very stable and it seems OK in small waves. cheers

Cheers bigmc, I think I have narrowed it down to the 10' Mana and the SB 10' Whopper. The 36" width would certainly help with stability thru the break. How would these 2 boards vary at on the waves ?

I think the 36" would just feel huge under foot. But with your size I am sure you would get used to it and in small waves I can't see a problem. By Xmas and 115kgs you might be on a 9'6" x 30" tho. cheers

Cheers for that. Got me thinking now. I didn't think under 10ft. Thanks for the advice. Plenty of Sup til Xmas should see me 115kg.

Cheers Rodders67,
Another tick for the Mana. Thanks for the feedback - it's invaluable.
