I know this has come up before on these forums, but I am trying to find out more about stand up paddle on the river in and around the city? I saw someone out there near west end the other day and am wondering if there's still crew who get out and about on the river very often? I've moved here from closer to the coast and am trying to find ways to get back into the water on a board more often...

Yeah the Brisbane river regularly features on any doco on bull sharks as a highly populated area. One took a horse that was training in the river near Eagle Farm a couple of years ago.

I would recommend possibly dropping by to see Simon at Board Crazy (Deshon st Woolongabba). I know he has been selling a few and might be able to hook you up with some paddle partners up that way. Best bet would be hitting the water in the bay, Manly point is an easy launch and you can be there in 30mins from the city.

IMO - Much safer in the Brisbane river on a SUP than in traffic on the M1 motorway....

If I lived in Bris I would have no hesitation in paddling there...

Sorry guys that river sucks,its such a shame that it was so poorly managed,it was once the dumping ground for all bad things,it is improving but there is NO WAY I would want to touch that brown dirty stuff.

As aus301 said it is FULL of bull sharks,you cant see them but they can see you.

OK you call it,Brown,Blue or Clear water,what would you prefer to paddle on

i paddle the manly/wynnum foreshore when i cant get to the surf, just make sure its at high tide

Thinking of going for a paddle on Saturday morn around 8sh from breakfast creek if any one is keen. Will be taking my NSP11 so will only be cruising.

Despite the shark warnings, I'm still pretty keen for city river action as I live in Paddo and work in St Lucia, so it's kind of easier to go from here and surrounds on a more regular basis (as opposed to getting out to the coast). I'd be stoked to head out to the ocean when I can, because, as has been pointed out, clear blue water is rather lovely!

I'm currently without SUP, but am in the middle of organising to get one from a friend, so should be fine to roll by Oct (fingers crossed). I'd be stoked to keep in touch with anyone who does get into the river around my parts, as I'm definitely up for combining paddle with chat. And tree barrels are always more fun when witnessed!
