The new board should be in the water in another week. Dean is keen to let it cure. Curing is much slower this time of year due to it being so cool. This morning he had it out in the sun with black plastic to encourage the heat build up to assist with curing
I heard a story this morning of a guy who used to make K1s who used to wrap them in electric blankets to assist in the curing process........until one caught fire!

Hilton,
Thats my eight eight for glassy and slighty bigger than average days. 3-4 plus.
Its my forth board, 2 x 6 oz + 4 oz patch on the deck, 2 x 6 oz on the bottom, VH foam, 8.5 kg. 8'8" x 29 x 3.75.

The 7'8" is half shaped so i post some photos. You still never told me how you 8 footer went?

Regards,
Scotty

Hi Mate
The 8'3" goes unreal. love the fish feel. For some strange reason it doesnt like the alley though!!!!
it has recently found a new owner in sydney. im sure hell love it as much as i do.
Finding it hard to come back to anything over the 9' mark. Ive made an epoxy 9'1. its getting glassed monday. Hopefully ive found a good mix with this one

HEY DALE /DEAN
I have just finished glassing my board , using kinetics epoxy and i built a rough box out of some cladded eps sheet (could use anything board really eg pyneboard or MDF)
left opening for fan heater , cured my board in it as per instructions for 4-5 hrs at 40-45'c and whamo , beats 28 days at room temperature.(well thats the instructions said also) i will post a heap of photos later when i get finished.

Here's the second lot of pictures that I took while watching Dean shape Dale's new board.

After taking the bulk off the rails it was more hand sanding.

This mesh stuff is amazing.

Dale and Jonathan watching while Dean does all the work.

Next the rails is the nose area get done.. And almost hit because I was too close.

Time to duck before getting covered in foam dust.

Dean looks closely along the rails checking for bumps and dips.. Looks pretty good to me.

Now the board gets flipped and bottom rails get done.

Dales glued on nose piece starts coming unstuck.. Nothing a wood skewer can't fix.

Nice nose shape don't ya think?

Are you guys watching?

Thats better.

I think Dale's a happy-chappy.

Time to put some weights on it to add some rocker.

First with just one weight.

Dale adds another weight to add some more nose lift.

Mmmmm.. perfect.

This angle shows the concave in the nose area.

It takes Dean less than 30 seconds to put the fin box in.. No router needed.

This is one of Dean's home made hand holes.

All done and we all think it's turned out great.. I'm sure Dale's smiling on the inside.

Was it worth getting my just washed car all dirty to get to Dean's house?... You betcha... Thanks Dean for letting us watch and take pictures.

How is the rocker held in place during glassing? I assume when the rocks are taken away, the blank flattens out again?

Arrr.. That's the tricky bit.. .. I'm sure Dale or Dean can explain that.

I think he drills through the fin box and runs a string through it attached to a hanging weight for the rear.

I'm not sue what he does at the front to hold the nose down during glassing the bottom.

That process is described here.

I'm guessing nobody is vacuum bagging on a rocker table.

To put in the rocker the bottom was glassed first
The tail was tied down from the leg rope plug.
The front was held down after glassing and while still wet by putting a plastic plate over the nose and screwing it down onto the timber. The screw doesn't go thru the foam.
Johnathan got a picture of this. Any chance of putting it up Johnathan?

I have a question about glassing over the fin boxes.

As I understand it you fit the fin box into the foam (as shown above), cover it with tape and glass over it.

At what point, and how, is the glass cut away and the tape removed?

Hey Gorgo, when I used to make epoxy goaties commercially and we had 5 x finboxes in the things, 2 of em for holding the rider to the thing via a seatbelt, so had to be super strong.

The best way is to put masking tape over the slot, but trim it so that there is only just enough so that it will still sit in place. Ya then epoxy it into the slot using a Qcell / epoxy mix - pretty runny though. I would also seal the blank at this stage using same mix.

Before glassing I would lightly hand sand the sealed blank and then fill any voids around the boxes with a thick bog of qcell/epoxy. Then glass the thing.

It wasn't until I was ready to spaypaint it - ie everything sanded, fillered, cutback with fine paper - that I would route the slot out with a router. This leaves a nice strong and water proof fin box

Dodgy Fin boxes were the number one cause of leakages in epoxy goaties.

The fin box needs to be ground off to fit the curve of the board (if there is any) before it goes in.. The normal way is to rout out and fit the box after glassing and then sand down the box the match the curve of the board.. Glassing over is much stronger.. IMO

To answer your question.. I'm guessing just before the board hits the water the slot is routed out so a fin can be fitted.

Oh yeah, forgot to add - sand the boxes thoroughly and bevel the top edge.

Hi all, sorry to be slow posting but here are some more photos showing a little more detail on the first stage of glassing the board and also putting in the rocker.

Single layer of 6 oz glass is laid over the foam and trimmed to leave enough to cover the rails

LSD pouring on the well mixed epoxy resin, hardener and pigment

Pushing the resin into the glass to make sure it's completely wetted out

Looks good!

View from under the rocker stand showing the position of the timber that the board will bend around. This was previously set up to give the desired rocker profile

Tail of the board is held down by the leash rope - this is tied to the fin box and allow the board to be pulled down very securely, also results in a much stronger board with everything tied in together

After glassing the bottom and the rails the rocker is set into the board by pushing the nose down

The finished rocker is set - and will be permanent when the epoxy goes off

From start to finish, how many man hours were involved ?
Any pictures of the fin set up?
How long did you allow for the board to cure?
