Turning flat without burying your rails. Slides etc.

IMVVHO (that's very very) mostly due to thick rails, wide tails and over proportionately small fins for the task at hand.

The term (I'm pretty sure) was first coined by Dogman in response to his frustration at seeing people knocked out of heats by guys doing slippery, slidy turns as opposed to full rail carves - at which he is the undisputed master.

It is not IMVVHO as stated by CMC a result of board design but rather a conscious effort to avoid using the rail through an entire turn thereby sliding through the latter part of it - this could be argued that it makes the turn faster and less risky but reduces the amount of spray

The banter in the other forum is the typical State v State stuff and shouldn't be taken too seriously.

Dishpan actually came from Woogie, Dane & Tully calling Dishpan (Keahi) as he worked at Noosa Surf Club as a kitchen hand. It was then relate to his style of surfing. More like a play on words. It was then commented on in contest.

Just saw this and need to apologise for any angst I may have caused in a previous post. Far as I was concerned dishpan was a lame ass style of surfing heavy on slide and trickery, lacking in power and second only in heaniousness to paddle twirling. Have never applied the term to any individual or group of individuals regardless of state of origin!!
Cheers

I don't have any problem with a bit of dishpannin at the end of turns and I'd be suprised if anyone else does.
SUP is judged based on shortboard criteria and every hack on a shorty these days ends with a tail slide or fin
release.

It's the first maybe 80% of the turn that should gauge and the last 20% can either finish it off or set you
up for the next turn depending on what you want to do.

Just think of the evil negative feedback you'd get if you accused Slatter of "DISHPANING"his way to another world title.....

Thats sorta what I mean...I think...

I know it's different on a shorty but it's the same!

Yeh I totally agree with you.A controled slide in a critical part of the wave can look awsome. What we need here is the best of both worlds, power in the manouvers with a tweak of "dishpan"to complete the act.

haha epic topic

sadly "for me" i cant take the credit for this one

cause it's true

woogie and tully used to nail the grom with "dishpan this" and "dishpan that"

but..... the grom is too good now.....dammit

and the cheesy smirks are being wiped off all our faces cause the grom is growing into his size.16 feet and blowing up.......well....sometimes........
