The idea of wearing a divers knife in a pouch strapped to your leg on ocean DWers makes sense, you never know.
Be great if you could transfer it to the end of your paddle if need be

Why take a knife to a gun fight. If you are going to be packing while DW'ing take a powerhead not a knife. Just make sure you don't blow some body part off.

Ben, thanks for giving us an account of what happened, I think you might be the first downwinder to get hit. I'm also sure you are tired of answering questions - but hope you have energy for a couple more:
Where you at paddling speed when the shark hit you the first time?
Did you know it was around before it hit you?

I'm involved with a shark deterrent here in SA and we've found that attacks get very random when water is murky or churned up from wind. Not ideal news for us downwinders, but it seems they make more mistaken identity attacks in those conditions.......

Hi peterp,
Yep I saw it before it came at me, we crossed paths and I wasn't to stressed so kept on chasing runners then maybe 5-10 sec later it bumped me, my gps says I was averaging 12.5 before the incident. Can't remember if I was on a runner or not when it hit me.
Cheers.

Hey folks,
I am the lucky / unlucky paddler.
It happened off currumbin on a pretty wide line, I saw the shark swim past and thought cool shark, then a few seconds later he bit or rammed my fin and I managed to land on my board. Then I turned around to see him coming again so I just splashed the top of the water, after a few more approaches I started stabbing it with my blade, it was like hitting a rock!! I was impressed with the strength of my fanatic paddle I did manage to break the handle off but just re glued it. This went on for about 5-10 minutes, it must of charged me 20 times and I hit it really hard about 10 times, it never latched onto my board, then Andrew Kerr was coming past out wide and I yelled out to him, he and Karla came straight to me as fast as they could and Andrew rafted up next to me then it just tailed us for a while longer and finally left us! I'm stoked I was with a group and they charged in without considering there safety. Thanks for all the concern from the sup community, have had a few visits and calls today. Board is fixed and ready to go. Sat is looking good lets get 50 people together and go for it hopefully that's the last time I have to tell the story!!!!
Ben
P.s i dunno what type of shark it was, but was thinking it was a bull from how insane it was

Wow i missed this post and i also had a few questions, although you just answered most in this post. It seemed like it was major aggressive that is crazy and obviously you would suggest a bull. But about how big do you think it was Sorry if you posted that and i missed it?

One more when you first saw it did it seem aggressive also, or only after it hit you

That would put the wind up you no doubt

Absolutely!

Except that isn't my current board, paddle or clothing brand - so a bit of a fail really.

Or do it right - roll depth charges off the back.

Glad you're okay Ben. I guess sales of wider boards with more volume at the back will go up now.

They are a sponsor in the SB room but Dave is a member on these forums (Katana). Check out his page www.surfsafe.com.au or even just check it out in the SB room. Heaps of stuff there.

I was chatting with Dave yesterday and he said he has had a bit of interest from Gold coast so he may be able to point you to someone who is fitting them or looking to

I'm so glad I have been offline for a few days and only just read this, I am travelling solo and just had a couple of LAGO solo surfs at some of the most remote and sharky locations in Oz.

It was too good to pass up but I admit I was ****ting myself the whole time, I was so glad a short boarder joined me yesterday.
Anyway I will be in Currumbin in a few days/week hoping to do some downwinders, ATM I am usually at the back of the pack so this should give me some incentive to pick up the pace.
