Hi Everyone.
Im currently in my final semester of my post grad course in Environmental Management, I need to develop a mock Environmental Management System (EMS) for one of my assignments.

I was looking at developing an EMS for a sup board shaper.. I would need to look at the factory, operations, waste storage, and processes to develop this. The work is solely for uni purposes and will not be used in any regulatory way.

Once i have completed my work - i will provide a copy. Im hoping by doing this I can develop in my essay some "green" practices and make a model for all board shapers. I would need to visit the site once - and may have to contact in the finalising of the report if I have missed anything!

Thanks for your help!!!!

Hi Jen,
Interesting subject you have chosen.
EPS recycling has many waste reduction options.
There are a few simple ways in the SUP shaping process that can minimise waste/cost etc.
I am not a pro shaper now, but I could help if you have any questions you would like to ask.
Cheers
Dean

I think its well established that I know very little about the process of constructing surfboards but I'll offer my 2c

The life cycle of a surfboard strikes me as pretty high impact. They are made of foam that is quite toxic and epoxy and glues that are very, very toxic. These materials contain high levels of what are known as Volatile Organic Compounds (V.O.C.) If you want to get the environmental impact of your surfboards down then look at finding ways to reduce levels of these VOC's. Probably by using less epoxy or foam or finding a way to substitute them for something less toxic but that will still retain the performance you want.

There is a guy in europe called Corran who is producing surfboards that are supposedly very low impact. I've only had a cursory look at his website and not really at all at his production process but the hype seems pretty promising. They are called Imagine Surfboards. He posts regularly on the StandupZone and I wouldnt be surprised if he was here too.

Good luck!
