Hey Olie,
Don't you ride a Stonker?......Did I see that board on the operating table recently?
Maybe you should listen to Hilly, & support the poor US economy.

Yes it was, it's quite brittle and light, the trick is not to knock it against anything. The wood deck adds strength so no foot indents, but the trade off is the weight. The board works for me, and as far as I'm concerned it's a keeper and I don't want to trade her anytime soon. My next carbon downwinder is going to be made by them also. It's all about caring and sharing.

Bugger the US economy, from what I see there are plenty of talented, and more deserving peeps making boards locally. That are lighter and better.

I really enjoy your input to these forums and would one day love to give one of your creations a whirl. I'm sure DJ can give me a shot on his one day.

Hey BP the last few weeks I've been trying to think of you as dead or invisible, but as you asked me a direct question I can't help myself in engaging with you once again.

I was taking the p1ss out of one of our self appointed experts in the field of board manufacture.

I visited LSD's workshop after a day in the surf, my jaw dropped - his ability in the surf was matched by his skills in the workshop - I consider him a genius and felt humbled in his presence.

LOL not much of an agenda there.
LSD can u produce 1000 boards next week at 6kg? If you can you will make a fortune if not suggest something positive rather than bush mechanic rocker profiles. We know it is not perfect but most major brands have a pretty good product. Yes they have to make money they are a business do you make a profit? Do you pay share holders no you do it for love that's great. But don't take the p1ss. You are a hobby builder get over it.

Come on guys. Lighten up. You take things so seriously. Get out there and have a wave for me will ya. And be careful lifting heavy objects or you may end up on the beach like me, watching Brooko and mates rip it up, getting over the hernia op, which this thread was asking about in the first place.

I would also consider wathing hemroids, Not being funny but they are a bugger of a thing to have and can be brung on by straining the same as hernia.

no sh1t man! Pretty stoked I spent my time previously explaining my situation. I am POSITIVE that I didnt pull a muscle/get a hernia by putting my board on and off my car/truck. I am POSITIVE that I caused this physical issue by paddling hard. This happened approximately 18 months after I started paddling, so I would be happy to say that there was atleast some level of paddle conditioning that had been achieved prior to the injury.

Yes, I ride a MASSIVE 11'4" Naish..............and catch my fair share of waves. Since I left Hawaii in 1989, I have almost exclusively ridden Mal's (we called them longboards actually). Many of the boards I have owned over the years were waterlogged, single fin "pigs" so I have been lifting heavy boards for quite some time.........Just hoping this slight background info might shed a bit more light on my situation for you guys who are actually discussing hernias on here.

I had one 2 years ago from rugby but had the operation and now all better.

Prevention is better than cure, build a strong abdominal wall (ie sit ups) and aaahhhem try to do a pre-game dump if possible (i kid you not).

It's not so absurd. When you are aiming products at the general public then it's better to know what they think than the opinions of a few pampered pros.

I got several cheap and free kites from three manufacturers by giving them useful feedback that they weren't getting from their pro riders.

As a general public kind of rider, I want sub-10kg SUP in the bigger sizes.

The current crop of short boards from Naish and PSH are all plenty light enough to chuck under my arm and toddle off to the beach.

The 10-11' plus boards are heavy enough to cause me a sore shoulder after the 800 metre walk to the beach and it's enough of a discouragement to make me think twice about hauling the SUP out of the overhead rack.

The solution is to make the big boards lighter, and/or make the short boards stable enough that I can comfortably handle standing on them in chop waiting for wind-blown sets.

I think both solutions are doable. If you look at the JP web site a sailboard of similar volume to my Starboard weighs around 9kg.

Gorgo I think you are after 2 different things there, a heavy 9 2 will be better in wind chop. Sits below the surface and water on top makes it more stable. At 105kg+ rode one the other day in 15 knots+ and it was ok. Light board will bounce more.

I remember jumping off a JL 10 8 onto a 11 6 Naish in wind chop and not being able to stand up as the corkiness threw me off.

Light boards are good in clean conditions if you have onshore wind weight is your friend, waves overhead+ and weight does not matter.

For me in WA weight is my friend 1k out and 2 foot chop corkiness is a hinderence.

Are you talking about bounce when riding or bounce when standing around waiting for sets?

I've tried the Naish 9'6", PSH 9'6" Wide AA and 10' AA and they are light enough to carry around but not at all stable standing around in chop.

I'm not too fussed about length. I just want a SUP that it light enough to handle comfortably and be able to carry it the 800m to the beach without stuffing my shoulder in the process.

Forget your doctor, I'd definitely be listening to Hilly, he's in hawaii and has visited 3 different board manufacturers and has the whole sup construction thing wired. Pay the 2k for a psh and help out all those poor struggling Hawaiians and give their share-holders their well earned cream puff at the end of the year. LSD is just a bush mechanic hobby builder who should get over it.

I love all these self appointed experts on this forum.

That is real harsh, And from the riding i have seen of yours and your self prff

BP

Now that's harsh, Oliver would have to be one of the most improved IMHO, I love the fact that Oliver and DJ started out flatwater paddling and are now into the wave aspect of the sport. mac

I don't understand why you think heavier is better - how does that work? Isn't it more about volume vrs weight of the rider. Weight of the board may have some advantages over durability but I don't think it has any other advantages.

If a board feels corky then you are too light for the volume of the board you are on.

If you have two identical boards, one with normal deck grip and one with a lead deck grip I'm sure the lighter one would perform much better in any conditions.

I say thank goodness for some of the so called "self appointed experts". I'd much rather get advice from someone who has spent a great deal of his life in the ocean in one boardsport or another(eg. Hilly), than some of the kooks here that have all of 2-3 seasons under the belt in one watersport and now refer to themselves as watermen!(hilarious posting a while back. Pity it was deleted or edited!)

PS. No offence to SUP kooks. I am one myself!

It appears that not many Hernias are caused buy standup paddling, (or lifting of heavy SUB's......a joke guy's)

I would even suggest SUP would tend to do the opposite, it may help prevent Hernia by strengthening core?

So......MYTH BUSTED?
