have punched through.... but just been sucked back.
Paddle hard into the wave (on your feet) put your top hand forward , feet in surfer stance , break at the knees and turn your head to the side and rest it on your front arm and punch through the wave , if you don't rest your head on your arm the wave will push your chin into your chest (very bad for the neck)
Very possible give it a go if you are game

Yeah I have been doing this but not on waves big enough for me to worry about my head. Usually the close out lip will hit me in the hips and it doesn't seem that bad. I'm yet to try it on anything much bigger than 3ft.
I'll always start paddling out on my feet but if I get smashed and continue to get stuck on the inside I'll have a go on the knees. But like others have said prone is easier to punch through white water due to the resistance the knees/hips cause when kneeling.
If I go for a dawny, I'll paddle for maybe 20m on the knees to get rid of the "still half asleep wobbles" and then get to my feet.
Each to their own IMO, no right or wrong really.
p.s. Good to see the forum hasn't changed after a short break away
