Bugger, speedy recovery mate.
Sounds like the girls are about to get a 8 week intensive training course with those radio helmets of yours. No doubt they will have the floater down pat by the time your back on the water.

Take it easy Phil. It is no fun being out of the water but you will love it when you get back on the boards

oooohhh sounds nasty hope you get better soon OG.

Probably the most painful part is not the broken ribs, but the fact that there is perfect swell and you cannot get out there for a while.

Better stock up on the DVD's and books for entertainment.

Hey Guys,

Thanks again for all the well wishes. Its not that bad really compared to back pain this at least stops when you dont move its not continuous.

It will give me a chance to help others down this way that want to learn on the river etc. We are going to have a fun day on Sunday just a river paddle for anyone interested.

Byo lunch and bring your board. There are a few girls that want to have ago for the first time. I could do with some help due to current circumstances just point them in the right direction!

Best Regards

Phill

Jeez OG, no half measures with you.

My son fell on one of his fins last friday and ended up with 5 stitches.
It's time I start thinking about a helment as well.

All the best and speedy recovery.

Hey phill, Bad new there mate Always happens on the day you dont expect it.

But i do have to ask if this is not a ploy? As the last time we spoke you said if you purchased another board this yr the wife was going to bash you.

So now you have a nice PSH gun .............

I hope you recover quick.

Best wishes

Yet another hellman downed by the most extreme of extreme sports. Get better soon.

My prescription for these kinds of injuries is to get comfy on the couch, pop some medication, and zone out on SUP and surf vids. You should fall asleep halfway through the first scene, but that's the idea.

Once or twice a day rug yourself up, pop some more meds and go for a walk along an ocean clifftop (preferably with a bit of wind) doing your best ancient mariner impersonation. A bit of a limp, and maybe a walking stick, adds to the image. It will make you feel better and give you some gentle exercise that will help the healing process.

Hey Mac,

I have always been a great believer in go hard or go home, I am never going to die wondering.

The reason we continue to try new fin sets and boards etc is, we just dont like scared cows unless they are in a nice Hamburger smothered in salad and onions.

I guess the reality is everthing has a price and a risk.

The accident yesterday really shook me up! The simple fact was I could have died! If I had not gotten back on the board I could easily have drowned because I couldnt breath properly. If the Paramedics didnt have oxygen I probably would have passed out from hyper ventilation.

I always insist the kids wear helmets, yet I dont wear one? I will from now on especially on the Gun. I also intend to get an impact vest for use in big conditions etc.

The reason I cam unstuck was the board reacted very differently to what I expected it to do. With the 8inch center fin I would not have gotten the 135+ deg change of direction off the lip and ended up in free space. The small M5s allowed the gun to turn much more radically than I would ever have thought possible.

We live and we learn.

I dont intend backing off at all but I will change the amount of risk I am prepared to take and how I prepare for it.

Phill

Did someone say "cow, hamburgers mmmm Im hungry already Phil.

You will be right mate you will be back out charging In no time, helmet or no helmet, vest or no vest , **** can happen and it still will, you could be wearing all that stuff be on your backhand on a sucky wave , board could flip upside down and you land on the fins on your thigh were theres a main artery , helmets and vest wont help that.

I think we have all been playing with fire down this way in the 40 knot offshores with the board flying back at us like a missle, but yet you can still get hurt in 2ft slop, its always the way, Robdog and I were talking about this just last week.

I busted 2 ribs on the kalama when I first got it, out on my own one day and thought I was gunna die carrying it back to the car and driving to hospital .

First surf back after 6 weeks on my shortboard the board flew back smashed me in the head and left a gash .

A month later surfing with robdog in 1 ft surf I did my ligament in my knee.

ITs all good though and back out there everyday charging, and so will you mate.

Dont worry about the hat and vest stuff, you have been charging up to now with out all that stuff , it was just one of those things that can happen.

Looking forward to sharing some nice summer surf with you soon phil.

Hey Brooko,

I take your point, I'm not going to back off not in my nature. I bought that board to surf the local bombies and i dont like unfinished business!

The helmet just might improve my looks as I am a fugly old bugger but I dont want red or pink they are taken! Your right I might look fat in the impact vest and we cant have that now can we laughs.

The video is cranked up already and we did get a little bit of footage of Kristi on the DC last weekend so when I get a chance I will put it up.

I hope to be back in the car by Friday for short trips so might get some footage over the weekend.

Just need to hunt down those that chuck buckets

Best wishes for a speedy one. You have nice sunshine, the women are waring bikinis not clad in 4mm of neoprene and you now have time to hand craft a hollow wooden SUP in the garage!!

Just read a thread on a UK forum - chap supping in a river near London, cut his leg on some metal under the surface, gangrene set in, then septicemia, currently in ITU after 2 operations to strip out rotting flesh and infection, then he will need plastic surgery to repair the damage - he may be out of the water for a while!!!

So, to all those young turks on shorties in hollow reef breaks - SUP is where the danger lies, it's a real man's sport I tell you!

Cheers, Paul

No good Phill, I know how you feel.
When I was about 14 or 15 I was off sick from school with a cough/cold and decided to practice my mono's on my BMX in the backyard (cos I was home alone!). I ended up crashing and landing on the side of a built in brick BBQ and broke 2 ribs.

Besides getting in troube by Dad I had to put up with the coughing pain for about 5 days until i got over the cold. I never want that again.

Hope you get well fast. Fingers crossed it all goes well.

Hey BP,

I wasnt too flash yesterday, but this morning is a lot better. It just a little weird to be able to feel the bone on bone grating when you move or cough

Makes me wonderhow the bones will eventually knit back together if your moving all the time?

My doctor says its better to keep moving around so go figure.
