It's looking a bit NNE early but swinging to the north and then NNW (ideal)by early arvo. Perhaps midday would be the peak

Christian I'll arrange a board for you and you won't need a wettie.

27 degrees tomorrow. No wet suit needed so long as you're not falling in a lot. I don't think we're getting the 40 knots we had last week so moderate skill level should see you stay dry for the whole run.

I think you will find that the Bay water temperature is about the same, maybe a little warmer, than PNG.

25 knots at the Beacon at 9am. I think we'll get a decent run from 11.30. But a dawn tomorrow could also be good.

It was a tough down-winder today with so much east in the wind.. It was very off-shore and we had to stay in close to prevent getting blown out too far.. But staying in close ment not getting big waves.. and also paddling 90% on the right side.. and every runner had to be surfed left.. Hard work but still good fun..

Here's a short vid from today's run.

Not sure who the handsome devil was that you tried to rear end at the 0.40 mark but you sure got your comeuppance. Looks like a sly little paddle wedge from your friend is what tipped you in.

Thanks for organising yesterday's paddle DJ! An interesting introduction to Downwinders - everytime there was a chance to link runners together, you found yourself heading towards Portarlington! Looking forward to an opportunity to get out there on a true North wind!
Great to meet all the folk that I read about on the Breeze!
Loved the way the Fanatic picked up runners!
Cheers

Ha.. Yeah it sure looks like you tipped me in but I'm sure it was me that just fell off.. That was a nice long runner and I had it lined up to cross behind you being on one wave behind you.. and then when you dropped off your wave and slipped back into the trough that I was on it left be looking for the brake peddle..

Umm probably a very stupid question/s

1) Whats a Down winder?

2) Living In mentone what beach and wind conditions would I be looking for?

You can paddle in a down wind direction and it's not really a down-winder.. Down-winders are when you can surf runners (wind waves) and to do that you really need a board that is designed to work on down-winders and these are very different to your typical wave boards (some wave boards will work) .. Living at Mentone you could do a down-winder from Rickets point to Frankston on a strong nor-norwester (20-30 knots).. We've done that and it was great.. You can also to a short run from Rickets Point down to Mordy on a strong NW wind.. You will need a second person so you can leave one car at the finish and both drive to the start (car shuffle).. You would be much better to do one from St Kilda to Rickets on a strong north wind.. That what we often do.. You can demo a down wind board from a shop if you're thinking about getting into down-winders.. This vid was our last down-winder (about a week ago) and it was St Kilda to Rickets run but I stopped at Sandy along the way and the others went on to Rickets point.
