How familiar are you with the local conditions within Western Port Bay? I'm sure DJ would welcome any valid suggestions regarding a safety plan.

Just wondering what Eddie has to do with the price of fish..

That guy is a legend and died trying to save people's lives.. I don't see how he could have anything to do with all this.

Maybe watch that first vid again at the start of this post and see what's really going on here..

You are no Robinson Crusoe there DJ. I had to buy a vowel to help me and was still stumped.
Could'nt see the connection with Eddie. Good video. Good luck with the paddle. Just feed off the critics. Thr more people that say you can't do it should give you the motivation to do it.

To the ppl concerned about DJ upcoming adventure.
I'm sure it would only be attempted in calmish conditions,
not in DW conditions.
Unless its foggy there is always sight of land.
Its tidal but this is an advantage if timed correctly.
It dries to mud flats and at low tide (although very muddy) it becomes as wide as a river in some parts.
Its remote but still in Mobile range.
There is plenty of farms and holiday homes on the mainland along the way.
I think it sound great, I wished I was up for it.
I think these Adventures should be encouraged and published.
And in case you wondered......... Port Phillip and WesternPort are not bays.
HaHaHa.

I've grown up with that stretch of water and have fished and sailed it for about 30 years.
Sure it's a big paddle but with the proper prep and timing it can be done without to many hassles. The staying overnight idea is fabulous with backup from phillip Island about 15 mins by boat.
For instance if we start at the SW corner, use the wind and an incomming tide and travel anti clockwise by the time you get to the NE corner it's time to use the outgoing tide to paddle home.
It's a big paddle in a single bite but maybe over 3 days should be no issues.
Cheers

Would it be helpful to point out at this stage that red capes in a bullfight are entirely ceremonial and have no effect on the bull given their red-green eyesight deficiency?

You may be confusing our two bays here, even though only one of them is a bay. We haven't tried downwinding on Westernport Bay yet - not sure if it's even feasible with the tides. DJ's plan is not suitable for dw conditions anyway as he wants to circle the island.

Western Port, is sometimes called "Western Port Bay", is a large tidal bay in southern Victoria

Port Phillip (also commonly referred to as Port Phillip Bay or (locally) just The Bay) is a large bay in southern Victoria

"I STAND CORRECTED".
I will now stand in the corner, hand me that that pointy hat. Lol.

The French island paddle with overnights would be great..
I offer my outboard powered inflatable for supply drop-off. (driver powered by beer).

Western Port Bay is South East of Melbourne.

Does anyone know why it is called Western Port Bay instead of Eastern Port Bay?

In 1797, George Bass received permission from Governor Hunter in Sydney to sail a whaleboat along the unexplored section of coast south of Botany Bay. On such a rough stretch of water, Bass could not get more than halfway through the strait now known as Bass Strait. This voyage led to the discovery of Western Port, so named because of its situation relative to every other known harbour on the coast at that time.

I'm keen DJ. My half hatched plan is a 45km paddle on the 1st day, to cover the North Side, and round the easterly point, and finish the day at McLeod Eco Farm. Accomm, dinner, breakfast, etc... Finished off with 25km home the next day.

Being totally self sufficient, I think you could carry about 16-20kg of kit on the 17's. Stored in a Rafter's Wet Bag, attached just in front of the rudder. Then the paddler happily stands behind the rudder.

Safety wise, it would be a matter of getting a good understanding of tides, and currents, and doing it in low wind.

My 5 day hiking kit is about 16 or 17 kegs. Fresh drinking water is my only mild concern... Or carry 4-5 litres?....

... and the English; bad navigation and then don't forget the foxes, rabbits etc...

Loving this topic - sounds like a fun adventure!

If you planned it real well with the wind - a summer cool change (N -NW - W - SW) it could nearly be a downwinder most of the way round LOL

So how did the bloody frogs get an island named after them anyway ??????
For all we did for them in the war, we get lumbered with a French Island.
There better be an Aussie Island off the coast of France.

yes , I recon anti clockwise on the incomming is a good starting thought, and stay at elizabeth island [ she may have limited beds there] or over at corrinella.
and then ride the tidal flow up to the NE corner the next day and time it for the ebb back down the north/west side .
the timeing of the tide and daylight will take a lot of thought.!

I,m thinking that from cat bay to cowes or rhyll , on a flood tide in a big westerly may be a real fast all time run for you guys

It's been a while but many moons ago I stayed on phillip Is for a few weeks and the first thing I noticed was the height and (POWER) of the tides. For some reason completly unknown to me at low tide you can be standing on dry rock with 1ft ripples in front of you and as soon as the tide turns it gets a little bit bigger, and bigger, and bigger until at full high tide you end up surfing 6-8ft waves that are peaking where you were standing at low tide. The volume of water is extrordinary and to be caught in it going the wrong way would be a real piss off. However I am a firm beliver that water is my friend....HO!!! I just remembered that Mathew Flinders lost crew in a tender in the same area.I think from memory they were rowing from shore to ship and it was late arvo, the parrot said they just vanished into the ocean one second there one second gone.It is thought that some tidal waves(tidal surge) sunk the boat. There were no survivors and as Flinders searched the coast for wreckage after several days small amounts of debree were discovered. That said use the tides and go anticlockwise...Good Luck....
