DJ, you were correct in you assumption the last board I had out was indeed the South Point Kalama 11'6". I was looking for a board to be paddled/surfed about 50-50. I live in Portland, OR - US, which is landlocked, (about an hour + to the coast),

Theres a guy called Pono Bill who I think lives in Portland (at least when hes not in Hawaii). He posts a lot on the standupzone.com and he also has his own blog www.kenalu.com which is all about SUP. He'd probably be worth getting in touch with if you need some local oregon knowledge

Lobes, thanks for the tip, I have been keeping an eye out for Pono Bill, but I have yet to run into him. Quick question for any of the Naishers out there; I finally had a chance to get out to the coast this past weekend, and I had a great flat water bay paddle before taking my 11'4" out in 1-3 ft surf yesterday morning. The board has been great and while I am still not an expert at paddling into waves, I was catching some nice little glassy rights yesterday. My question though, is regarding a differnt trailer fin set-up. The 10.5' wood fin that came with the board is absolutely awesome for flat water paddling, not to mention gorgeous, but I was hoping somebody, (D.J.?) could recomend a smaller trailer fin for surfing. I could get to the nose, no problem, but when I actually dropped back and tried to surf the board from the back it was a little less responsive than i would have liked. It definitely felt as though the large trailer fin the biggest cause of this. Anybody out there have a recomendation? Thanks

Abe, I'm using an 8 1/2" fin in my 11'4" Naish now instead of the big stock 10 1/2" fin.

It's a fin from a JP windsurfer.. It works well and there's less chance of hitting it on rocks when it gets shallow..

Here's a pic.

Sweet, thanks D.J. I have what I think is an 9" Rainbow trailer on a differnt longboard that i am going to have a go on the 11'4" ASAP. Hopefully that loosens the board up a bit. Also happy to report that I have been getting out on flat water a 3-4 times a week, not to mention a couple hours in the surf this past weekend, and my board doesn't appear (can't check under the pad) to have sustained any damage whatsoever, even minor deck denting or cracking. And I am a big guy who is usually pretty hard on boards. D.J. what are you paddling with there? Looks a bit like the Werner Spanker, but with a bigger blade.

It's just the angle of the pic that makes the blade look wider than it is.

My paddle in that pic is actually a Kialoa Shaka Pu'u... Great paddle.
