The Alley no thanks as I said before its the best sup wave for miles.

The story I was told today is this local has had enough of his local 20 plus years been over run by sup's,now this is his problem not mine.

the problem at the moment is the sand of the point is gone. now they all want to move over to the wide bank.

then there is a couple of sup pers who want to take every set wave that comes through.

geez their even giving me the s####. let a few go through boys

btw, why any shortboarder would want to surf the alley like it was today is beyond me

It's not just the guys taking the sets, but all the sup kooks that think its a free for all and on top of that end up in the way whether paddling for a wave, falling or paddling out....

Heard of a local Mal rider getting the sh-ts with sup's paddling for waves and falling off today at the Alley so he took the no rules approach and dropped in on anyone riding a sup

Legend

Obviously the legend hasn't been hit on the back of the head by a "falling-off-kook's" sup...yet!

as a point of interest on the issue of dropping in- sometimes you just have to 'go' and get off as soon as you can.

trying to pull off a sup late off a wave can cause all sorts of #### for the guy coming through

My young bloke was out this afternoon and confirmed there was considerably tension between the SBers and SUPers. A lot of yelling but he wouldn't tell me exactly what was said.

Just too many SUPs he said and no waves were left for anyone else!

cracks me up seeing these "good ol boys" getting cranky because their waves are getting taken off them when they spent years being wave hogs before the sup thing took off. payback is a bitch fellas.

Gotta agree. I used to be a short boarder regular at the Alley getting the pits with all the "oldies" on mals hogging all the waves and taking them all from way out wide cause they could, and a lot really do abuse their long board benefit. Now it seems the shoe is on the other foot and I'm a low life SUPper (one trying to do the right thing and show respect, tact, etc). With so many different surf craft and skill levels out there these days especially holiday periods and weekends I think everyone is just going to have to learn to take a deep breath and try and remember why they started in the surf in the first place, hopefully for fun. Also I think SUPs can appear a bit intimidating as we're standing and "looking down" on them lying down which can seem threatening, maybe try a smile and a g'day.

Just wanted to add my confession that I've been guilty of taking off after waiting so long and watching people blow waves, honestly thinking that someone way over inside isnt going to make it and then finding I have to try and pull off on a SUP creating all sorts of mayhem. S**t just happens in the crowds sometimes. I've also had my share of donks to the head from a wayward mal.

I think I had the well wishes from the cranky Long boarder a few weeks ago, as I was paddling back out I ended up in his take off zone. So I yelled to him to go as I was able to get out of his way in time, but received his greeting of F#@k off at which time I thought DICK HEAD. Minutes later as a fellow SUP paddled out between us the other Sup received the same greeting, so we both decided that this must be the new greeting in the surf and spent some time greeting him with the same but with no sign of a friendship happening, he left. We where sorry to see him go.[}:)]

I agree with your Agreement 😜 a certain bunch of the local longboard crew are just whingers.
Karma has come back to give them a SUP sandwich.
I short board, kite surf & SUP the Alley but there is one thing I will never do out there and that's be a miserable Mal Rider!!

Surfed the alley for the first time in around a year this week. It was my first prone surf for a good 8 months too. Normally SUP in Port Phillip Bay and Gunamatta here in Victoria. I was envious of the SUP's but most of the crew kept wide and there wasn't any talk (positive or negative) in the water about them. I did see one guy on Wednesday morning trying to paddle on his knees to catch a wave, nose dived it on a one foot wave and the board flipped over and nearly hit a young girl on the head. I felt embarrassed to call yourself a SUPer after that.
My kids couldn't get over how crowded it was there especially after the large surf early in the week. The vibe was good for the most part especially if you make eye contact, acknowledge a good wave or let one go through, but there are some grumpy bastards out here too.
But it was great to get into some warm water and get back on my SB.

I was born in Williamstown in the Painters and Dockers years. Stop whinging or I will exercise my genetic birthright ability to provide wonderful fitting concrete boots

I hated the Alley last week, this morning I hated it as well and was speaking with Fish Fry Grant who advised me to relax, breathe and let the waves come to me.

I did and from then onwards had a great fun little surf getting familiar with the Carbon wrap again. I even went across a couple without falling off.

My comment would just be that for all the talk on here about "kooks" (which I assume is another way of calling someone an idiot) at Currumbin for my first time out the front today (in the morning) ever, it was pretty social and orderly. I've been at it for a couple of years with NO prior surfing experience and like Bigad did an apprenticeship in the creek and creek mouth. I thought today was a good day to stretch my skills and it worked!!!

I caught 3 waves that came through over about an hour and I was more than happy to try and fit in and not piss anyone off. Heck, I even said hello to complete strangers!!!! And even made a friend out there

Whoever you were today thanks for the encouragement out there....

one stoked frog
