For the last 8 days I've been lucky enough to be in remote New Ireland Province of Papua New Guinea filming the worlds first SUP Surf Movie "Living the Stoke". Its being produced by Von Piros productions who most here will know on the forum as Piros.

We have had a very very good time. Unfortunately I have had to return to Port Moresby for work but Piros and the guys are still out there filming and in fact I drove them (by speedboat) to an even more remote location called New Hanover island which is in the far North West of NIP and as I left the lagoon they were all attempting to pull into a barelling right hander with mixed results.

When we arrived in Kavieng we were a bit worried as the swell reports hadnt been that optimistic but the surf guide from Nusa Island Retreat where we stayed met us at the airport said they had been getting head high waves that day so we got a little bit optimistic and the following morning were not let down as we scored an epic overhead session at a remote speck of an island about 20 minute boat trip from the resort. We charged that all morning them went back for lunch and in the afternoon the swell died off a bit but our surf guide managed to find us a nice easy right hander perfect for noseriding.

The next seven days continued in that vein as we would average 3 surfs a day and have been quickly using up hard disk space with all the videos and stills (dont worry we have heaps left)

Unfortunately on Day 2 Piros snapped his new DC 8'11 completely in half riding a gnarly left hander that he was repeatedly warned not to surf by the locals. Even with Dale Chapman himself in the group we just didnt have the resources to fix it in that remote location. But its all good as hes now riding the DC 10 we took as a backup board for exactly that reason.

Piros invited me on the trip having only known me through Seabreeze and despite the fact they have all know each other for years I never once felt like an outsider. I shared a bungalow with Al Hunter and Dale Chapman and I gotta say every surf trip needs a Dale Chapman! His enthusiasm for surfing is so overwhelming its infectious and the guy himself is a crack up with a million and one different stories he loves telling and needless to say he knows a thing or two about board design as well. In fact the same goes for all the guys, there was never a dull moment!

Piros stuck a randomn selction of photos on a USB before I left so I could put it up for you. Many more to come!

Piros charging overhead surf on Day 1 before he snapped his board

Piros in the water at the same location

Coreban, DC and Starboard boards at the same location.

Rosco on his 27" wide Gerry Lopez, showing his fine balance

The last person to successfully ride Piros' DC 8'11

Taking a dinghy into town to watch the Melbourne Cup at the Kavieng club. I cant remember how we got back but I was dry so presume I didnt have to swim (Was about a km through a lagoon to get there)

The team paddling into the sunset one evening

Thats all I have uploaded for now. I got some more but photobucket is taking its sweetass time so will post more tonight

Awesome photos! That first one of Piros is a cracker. Who was riding the Coreban and how did it go? I assume it's the 9'6.

There were two Corebans, both 9'6, one yellow and one blue being ridden by Adam and Brett respectively. They seem to go pretty well, they have a lot of volume and catch waves really easily but still rip on them. They have a rolled deck though which may take getting used to, did for me anyway

Unfortunately not Piros broke formation and paddled across the channel to it while we surfed another reef. He snapped the board before the camera boat had realised what was going on. Dale surfed it on his shortboard and reckoned its one of the best lefts hes ever surfed. Period.

They will definitely get more footage of it though and if un/lucky maybe even capture some more carnage

Dale Chapman taking on the same wave Day 1

Dale building speed on his DC 8'8

Dale again with a hard turn

Our drivers and surf guides were excellent taking us to all the best spots and handling the boats superbly

Alain paddling past the volcano. With his green board, rashy and French accent he was immediately christened "Kermit le Frog"

In the dinghy with Nusa Island Retreat in the background where we stayed

Bungalows were pretty good, with nets over every bed tho to be honest I hardly noticed any Mosquitoes. Food at the resort was superb and it was always a race to beat Dale to the buffet every night. Plenty of Lobster. crab etc

Paddling into the sunset at Long Longs a fun little right hander

Sounds like a great trip can't wait for the movie.
I'm heading up to Nusa Island Resort this Saturday coming. Was planning to take short board and 9-6 SUP, but my mate just called advising that they may not take SUP on plane. We are flying Air Nuigini from Syd to Port Moresby , then up to Kavieng.
How did you blokes get your boards there? any hassles with the Airline?
Appreciate any tips.
Cheers

I think you'll be fine. We had about 18 SUPs between 8'8 and 12'. There was a hassle loading them in Port Moresby and our take off was delayed about 30 mins but to be fair I dont think the baggage guys had ever dealt with that many large boards before. In the end they all got on and it was all good.

If you fly Air Niugini they have no size limit I regularly fly with my 12' SUP. But check and make sure your Domestic aircraft is the F100 (they are a larger twin engine jet) If you on a Dash-8 you're screwed as I dont know if they will fit a 9'6

International from Sydney you should be fine as they use big Boeing jets

Just received more news about the boys. Apparently they have been surfing some remote breaks for the last few days called "Gas Chambers" and "Blood Reef". Apparently they had some awesome waves, got barrelled and scored epic overhead conditions. Word is a few more boards got snapped but apparently its on camera and may make the movie. Air niugini is having a shocker though today so they are still stuck at Kavieng airport. Will post more news when I get it if Piros doesnt make it on here first.

I only got back late last night and just started going through the 1000's of photos , we struck gold with the waves and cultural experience. Lobes it was great to finally meet you and thanks for all your help , especially driving the boat from Nusa to Clems and back again a 6 hour return trip a hell effort and next time you are in Aus leave your wallet at home the drinks are us

All the boys are so stoked with the trip, we got some amazing photos and incredible video this is just a few shots from one camera from break called STEP ON BLOOD and they told us it couldn't be surfed on Sup's. It was really heavy but we had heaps of fun , I won the claret award for slamming the reef the most but Brett paid the biggest price snapping his board.Plus there is some shots from Clems place on Tunnung Island a true Island paradise.

I'll post some more pics in the next few days.
