Looking for advice to deal with the biggest kook I've ever encountered on any form of watercraft.

See this guy about 45 maybe older, nice sort of chap has arrived at my local on a sup.Nothing new it
happens from time to time.

The issue is he is a knee paddler,I mean he paddles around on his knees the entire time never stands up
until he is midway down the face of a wave,he then simply stands and holds the paddle in one hand.
Surely this is not stand up paddle boarding.

This guy more often than not blows wave, misses them or goes belly up ditching his board and paddle.
Takes off when people are just infant of him or there is no clear run (he can't turn)

Now the question should I tell him to pull his head in before he rips someones head off? tell him to learn
elsewhere? or give him a right serve?

Tricky situation but I think any words would be best coming from a fellow sup'er, preferably a guy who is an experienced and advanced rider. Advice and/or critism I think would be best served from guys surfing the same craft. I've never experienced it but I personally would respond better to a fellow sup'er if i was on a sup than a guy on a longboard or short board...

Just kindly ask beforehand if he needs help. Not all disabilities are visible, and this guy could have some that you are not aware of (stiff joints, muscular / neural problem, balance issues, ...)

Of course, being an asshole is not a disability :-)

The most probable cause is that he jumped into SUPing with no ocean culture. Tell him that he should try to get some surfing courses, or at least some mentoring to learn the "road rules" of surfing.

One day he will come a big gutser and hurt himself or someone else.

Unfortunately this is the only way some people learn.

Mac, I think you should have a polite word with him.

Talk to him!
A lot of us kooks don't know we are doing anything wrong!
But don't wonder - if he's an arsehole find out and tell him.
Not rocket science

Im with lacey on this one - and isnt it law now that a mal rider cannot officially make a complaint about a sup'er without photographic or video evidence??

Telling him to pull his head in = upset Mac and rider and possible confrontation
Give a right serve = Above
Maybe tell him theres a great bank for learning down north Kirra way and hes not really fitting in.

highly skilled surfer

ever tried to paddle out on your knees - bloody hard work - cant get up any forward speed so whitewater washes you back , have waves breaking on your face , much easier to punch through standing up .

and catching waves on your knees - never tried that one and pretty sure its actually illegal in comps ,but have to give it to him would take a very calm temperament to pull it off - one slip could get very ugly very quick .

maybe just needs a quiet word on surf etiquette , technique , maybe board selection- probably has no idea he is attracting attention of the wrong kind

If short boarders are surfing where mac surfs they ought to be shot and hung out on the rocks at lovers
No excuses considered

One of my mates kneeled too much for some time. After more time on the water, more time on the board and losing a bit of weight he now stands up most of the time. It's taken him a while but he is now catching 90% of his waves standing. He always tries standing to paddle out, but this isn't always possible even for experienced SUPers where we paddle. Kneeling for some people is part of the learning curve.

If the guys learning leave him to it, or give him a few friendly tips.

If his style is truly endangering other ocean users have a quiet and constructive conversation with him maybe?

None of the above, never offer advice unless it is asked for, you don't know what his issues are.

Why is it your problem anyway? Cant you carve circles around this guy, just avoid him.

Yeh I had a mate back in the 70's who always surfed on his knees, he called it kneeboarding, his mates called him cripple, I agree that's not politically correct nowadays, probably wasn't back then either, however he used to drop into some steep waves have some great waves but for the life of us couldnt believe he didnt want to stand up and surf, probably thought he was George Grenough? this guy my be a throw back to those days, like what these guys did back then, tell him to #### off

I think you may have missed the point here Darryn.

I read that Macaha was worried about this guy hurting him or someone else.

In my opinion you should not venture into the surf around other surfers, of any type, until you are fully proficient.

SUP's are bigger and heavier than other boards and therefore are more dangerous. Couple that with inexperience in a busy line up and you may have trouble.

Everybody has to learn and get experience no matter what they ride. Smart people get it away from others where they do not put themselves or others in danger.

The stand up/knees thing is completely irrelevant. If this guys wants to kneel it is entirely up to him.

More relevant is poor surf etiquette. He needs to get out of the line up if I can't mix it with the others. There's got to be other breaks where he can go for a surf and not be a danger to others.

and to do that in a crowded line up it just dangerous whether he knows it or not
