The weather is looking sick for the race today.
Still abit of swell around too.
Bet the crew who are in the Whalebone are loving the surf conditions.
Better get some waves in before the race. See you all down there.
WOOT!

Bit disappointing full list of results seems extremely hard to come by - even at the event itself! There was quite a few competitiors and not all competing on designated point to point craft, some form of recognition would be good to see, if the event is expected to grow and prosper for next year. Congratulations to all entrants on this premiere event!

Thanks to Peter Dunn for including us in the Whalebone classic. A great weekend for all the surfers with excellent weather and fun waves. They have a brilliantly run event going there.
Thanks to Ian Gross for running the sup race with his team.
The entry list had 25 starters but a couple of no shows reduced the starting fleet to about 20. It was good to see quite a few very recent converts to the sup's having a go even if it was the first time in a distance paddle, let alone a race.

The start of the race was a bit muddled as competitiors hung back from the line in a boat start, so as to not get blown over early with a fresh wind behind them at the start. But it was a good clean start for everyone with no bunching up and no clashes or congestion.

The sup race was alot of fun but tough work trying to keep up with the leaders. Once Scotty Mckercher set the pace and with Mike Galvin and his mate (a charger from the east coast) slipstreaming "tour de france style" powering for 2nd it was clear it would be impossible for most to catch them. My apologies to the guy in fourth as I can't recall his name, but he was the only one able to really get close the leaders having made up alot of ground from a way back. He managed to put a big gap between himself and the fifth position paddler (me).

Well done to the women for their effort with the results as greenroom stated including Yolanda ? in 2nd, and to the eldest paddler at 60 years of age giving it a very good effort.

Most boards used were the 10'5, 11'2 and 12'2 surf model starboards with a few naish 11'6's, a jimmy lewis point to pointer, one F16 and Scotty on a starboard point to point proto.

Conditions were almost perfect with a calm sea and 5 to 8 knot crosswind blowing offshore, so it was relatively smooth. Wedged in between the big windy storms of late we could not have asked for much more. Glad the shark decided not to come and have a sniff at the competitors also.

I am sure the full race results will be posted shortly. Those in charge were fairly busy in pack up mode most of the remainder of the afternoon and getting ready for the presentations at the Cottesloe Hotel. (and taking full advantage of the flowing beverage after the main heats, thanks to the sponsors.)

It was great to be included in such a respected event as the Whalebone classic, and I hope we get the same good luck next year with a few more entrants. But I think the competition will be much tougher with a few more talented riders.
Thanks to all the event organisers and sponsors.

Big thanks to the organisers of the Whalebone and Ian from Starboard for putting together the SUP race! Bravo, a great event!

It was a great day and a fun paddle. (Thanks for the company paddling greenroom). Sun was shining, wind was offshore, and a couple of free beers at the end of the day!!!!! Couldn't ask for much more than that!

I would highly recommend people joining in next year as it has the potential to be a great yearly social event! The partys at the Cottesloe Beach Hotel were great with heaps of prize giveaways through Saturday night and at the presentation on Sunday.

Thanks to all that made it FUN!

Rezzie

Thanks a lot to Peter Dunn, Starboard, Cott Hotel and all the other sponsors and organisers for a great experience.

although next year I think a little more training would come be helpful

The conditions were perfect and the crowd at the end helped get my buggered body over the line.

cannot wait for the next one

Many thanks to Peter Dunn for organising the event. As Paul said the weather was fantastic and Huey was kind enough to give us a little tail breeze and small south/west runners.

The 2 leaders powered out early and were going to be difficult to catch, I think all the boards in the top 7 were over 12 foot. I was eying the FC16 (entered under invitation) in front of me most of the race and just slipped past him on the line - I am not sure how serious he was paddling, but he was a little surprised to get passed by a 11'2 board..

Great fun and good to catch up with Greenie who gave me some good advice on fin position and a friendly chat.

Cheers

Yeah well done to Peter Dunn, Ian, Michael, Marco and everyone who came together for a super fun race.
Everyone did really well. Congratulations.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the vibe that the longboarders gave to us. We felt welcomed. Maybe Peter might squeeze a few stand up paddle surf heats next year?
One thing I did learn during the race though was how unfit I really am

Actually if you look at Greenrooms post youll see "last" in brackets. The call of surf was too strong for him towards the end and he had to go play.
Thanks to all those that organised for the Sups to be part of the Whalebone and for all the longboarders for making us feel welcome.
Well done to everyone who entered it had a great feel about the race.
And thanks for the hoot when i caught that wave Greenroom wasn't game to turn around and wave once on it for I would of come a cropper for sure.
Lookin forward to the next group paddle.

It was a great day for the race and also meet a few more SUPers

Yeah a big thanks to Peter Dunn for inviting Standup paddle to the Whalebone Classic and also Michael and crew for all the behind the scenes work and on the day.
Good one to jenkz for managing to score a wave during the race

I was consistent falling off getting in the water and falling off getting out

Don't worry Greenie there was a few of us down that end of the race

Cheers

If the waves at dutchies had been a bit more regular, there may have been a few more racers stop for a wave or two on the way through. Maybe next year a one wave stopover should be included for all competitiors -like the F1 pitstop drivethroughs.

How good is the weather the last few days? Glassy paddling heaven.
I am already thinking of a few fun sup events for the not so serious and serious paddlers amongst us.

It sounds like next years Whalebone classic will be a hit also. Hope we get a repeat of the weather.

Good on you Paul. It would be great to have a few other sup events to look forward to. I couldn't get to this one unfortunately. Sounded like fun.

Wasn't there a juniors event? I thought you would have been odds on favourite for the under 14's

Greenroom is my hero! Any person who mid way through a race sees a wave and just has to go and play with it is a legend in my book. Hail! Greenroom!
