Just wondering if anyone else gets motion sickness after a few hours out on the SUP and what they do for it? Or am I just weird....

Suffering.

I was really crook during the last part of the rotto race. I'd never been sick on a sup before but I'm really bad on boats. I was going to take something for sea sickness before the race but decided against it as I was worried it would make me drowsy. I think stu had some herbal seasickness tablets that are not supposed to not make you drowsy.

Rez you were out a long time in the heat with no hat I reckon you got a bit of heat stroke or dehydration.

I drank 2 litres of water when I got home after my 6.5 hr session and I had a hat on (cool look not). Feel fine today.

Was great today same spot solo 3.5 hrs

Yeah, you might be right there Hilly. I drank about 3L when I came in also.

I feel like I am still moving on the water until I wake up the next day. I don't really feel sick out there....having too much fun to notice I guess. Ive heard those drowsy tabs are pretty good so might be worth a shot but I also think that next time I will take out some water and a snack.

Hilly I was soooooo tempted to head out there again today but I can't breath without my muscles hurting!!!!!! Been way too long between paddles for me not to feel that sweet session yesterday! Got my confidence back so looking forward to the next one. I knew you would have gone there again.

Wednesday looks good????

Ha ha ha. Well we know that wouldn't have been a problem in our old work set up would it? Too bad.

If you change your mind send me a text.

I have that 'sensation' aswell sometimes, to be honest I think I just put it down to sinus', or ears or something stupid like that. Never really mentioned it to anyone , never really suffered from seasickness so I did't put it down to that at all. I guess I thought it was something 'balance' related because of the moving sensation. I food for thought I guess.

I had 3 hours with another mate out at Thickshakes yesterday. It was probably as good as it gets. Waist to chest high. Some little screamers coming through

Just a thought...
Avoid the tablets especially if you are racing as they can dehydrate you more. An old trawler trick is to just suck on a slice of ginger.

If you don't like the taste fresh just have a few pieces of cystalised ginger from the shop.

If it is after the race / long sesh then have a ginger beer.

Cheers

Hi Rez

That guy on the big Starboard who had leggie issues at the end when you came over told me he drops a big bottle of water on the boat 3/4 or the way out. I am going to do this when a long session is on. I was as tired as I have ever been on Sat night

Yeah good plan. I remembered that I have a good size bright yellow water-tight bag that I was going to tie onto the nearest cray float if I was going solo again. I really didn't want to go in but I knew I wasn't going to last much longer without some fuel.

I have actually puked on my board, getting use to the motion of the ocean. I was speaking too one of the fisherman, and he advised me to avoid milk. Even milk in coffee, and i have noticed a huge differance to my sea sickness when i have a coffee before training as apposed to no coffee. But agree with the drinking of loads of water and hats for Loooonnnnngggggggg sessions in the sun

Great idea on the water, sounds like what you were feeling was dehydrated. Here's a link to an article that is quite good.

Get off you board and float for a bit , I used to do this with my mates who got sick offshore fishing and get them to jump in , it really does help.

Check.

Hat, water, food, ginger and floating in water is good. Sea sick tabs and milk in coffee are bad .

Piros, last time I went offshore fishing I was sick for 3 days after, I never make burley though . At least we came back in with 2 big Dhu fish to make it worth while. Yum.

Thanks for the article CMC. My triceps were cramping at the end of the session so I think I was seriously low on fluids.

2 big Dhu fish
that makes it worth while thats for sure when we go tow surfing if my partner is on the ski or sled just drifting for 10 mins he's gone but leave him in the water he's fine.

Hey Rez,

Definitely not alone on the seasickness thing. I get quite nauseous paddling in ocean conditions & I get seriously vomitous if I sit down on my board when there is a bit of swell around. I have to stay standing up, focus on the horizon & breath through the mouth.

And this nausea doesn't occur after 'hours on the water' it happens in a short 3km paddle if the conditions are rough. A trigger that makes it worse is if a boat goes by & I get a whiff of diesel fumes.

What ever you do, don't listen to the suggestion to get into the water if vomitous ..... made that mistake once and was still throwing up while swimming!!!! Yuk !!!!!!

I have been like this since a kid. I am also useless on buses and not too flash in anything other than the driver's seat of the car. Trains & Planes seem to be ok .... go figure?

There is no way in the world I could ever be a prone surfer. I swapped boards, out in the water, with a friend who wanted to have a go on my SUP, and after 10 mins of sitting on his toothpick I was sick for the rest of the day.

There may be light at the end of the tunnel though: I had my first ever 'not-too-seasick' trip on a boat after taking a pill (although I did feel a little drowsy, very thirsty & we were only out for about 2 hours).

Happy Paddling & please share anything that works
Cheers
Mel
