Have a new Kialoa insanity, and really like it.My question is the highly polished handle I find pretty slippery. The old Makani handle was no gloss and no probs .Should i sand it to no gloss, tape it ,wax it .Any none too drastic solutions?

I was grinding into a strong headwind today and I was glad to have my Insanity because of the softness on the joints without the shaft being too bendy..

I've always loved to gloss finish on the Kialoa shafts.. untill it gets wet.. Then it can get pretty slippy..

I would try wax first.. Then if still not happy give it a light sand with one of those soft sanding blocks that you can get a Bunnings..

That should do the trick..

Thanks DJ .I don't find the polished shaft too bad, just the handle.I was thinking wax first ,as I hate taking sandpaper to a new paddle.See how that works ,then if necessary do as you suggest....Cheers

An alternative is to lightly sand the shaft and handle, apply some epoxy resin & put peel ply over the epoxy. When it has gone off, simply remove the peel ply and you have a surface with plenty of grip.

Monster paint would be good and good for the front end of the board as well.Seems a little hard to locate in Australia, maybe one of the safety companies could supply non slip paint but hard to know which ones are suitable.

I got a can of monster paint from the Jervis Bay sup guys when they were at Merimbula last year. Try them.

As Monster paint is not imported anymore in France, people here have been trying various clear non-skid paint in marine shops with good results.
The important point is to try them to check that they are really clear and stay clear in the sun.

This one for instance seem to work perfectly http://www.soromap.com/en/varnishes/93-non-slip-varnish.html and is cheaper than monster paint. French made, but similar products should be available everywhere there are boats.
