Hey DJ saw these and thought they'd be great. My Deep has no handles and an.old style centre grab.
Have you got a handle like off a clubby board, if so where can you buy them?
Thanks

Looks like it would be really easy to wind the screws in too far and unwittingly punch an hole through into your foam anyway?

Yes.. .. That's why it would be very important to trim the screws to exactly the right length or use washers to prevent that happening.

Spot on DJ!

The screws would need to be trimmed to suit the handle being used. I suggest buying your handle (or I can supply with a package), winding the screw all the way through the handle and through the STIC-IT handle mount. This will give you the amount of thread that will need to be cut off from the screw.

To be on the safe side once the handle mounts are installed and the screws are cut down to the right length I would suggest using a spring washer to ensure the screw doesn't touch the board.

Cheers

Hey Clint.

The handle mounts are designed to be used with a Surf Life Saving style handle similar to those found on the clubby mals.

Google them they are easy to find and usually bought in a pair.

I can also supply a handle to suit along with a package if you require.

Cheers

DJ

Was wondering if your Stic it points have held up to the test of time?

I'm looking at installing something similar and was wondering how durable they've been.

Looking good.

How did you prep the board - metho / turps / alcohol wipe ?

Thanks for sharing DJ.

Hey supanimal,

I suggest giving the area you will be sticking the Stic-it composite soft pad eye a light sand with 60-120grit sand paper and then cleaning with Acetone or a similar alcohol before applying a glue.

DJ only cleaned his board with turps and stuck them on with an epoxy glue. This is perfectly fine for most applications, but to achieve the highest load carrying abilities of my product I suggest giving the board a light sand as mentioned above.

Cheers

never use turps. it leaves a oil residue.
Always use metho or isopropyl alcohol.

Turps is fine but you are right about the residue. You just need to go over the spot with
household Spray n Wipe to get rid of the residue. I find turps works best if you need to
remove glue left from old deck pads, stickers etc.

DJ,

I'd be putting that can of Coke in the back pack rather than relying on one strap.

and if using Spray and wipe, rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove S&W residue...

Id be tempted to try a little methol ethol keytone, ie plumbers cleaning solvant. its a great etch primer. I have never used it on finished epoxy but have on aluminium that is getting epoxy on it...

Looks like a good option for attaching your camera mount without 500m of duct tape DJ!

Hi husq2100,

The screw used is a 316 M5 screw.

There is 4mm of thread engagement through the soft pad eye, with 2-3mm of that thread being in a 316 locknut.

Your welcome DJ,

Ill post some photos a bit later of a pad eye that i stuck on the hull of a boat more than 2 years ago to test the durability of my products. After 2 years of being in full weather 24/7 365 the pad eye still looks great and there is no degradation of the rope loop either!

how does the CF go as far as thread pull out? Given that basic engineering would be 1x dia for depth of thread engagement

hmmm so no answer on thread pull out. I think they will be totally fine for a carry handle, I do wonder how they will fair if they are used for clubby style handles and holding onto 12.6 boards in surf??? The problem being that If you have to cut down the bolt so it doesnt damage the board, it will be very easy to lose a % of the thread engagement in the steel insert. I dont think the CF will be great after a while at holding onto the thread???

There is a stainless steel nut inside.. and under the outer carbon fiber dome.. No chance of it striping or pulling out IMO.. The only thing you need to be careful of is you need to make sure the bolts are not too long and end up screwing into the board.. It's not hard to get the length right by either cutting or grinding off the bolt/screw to the right length.. or pack it by using washes.. None of mine have come off..

Dj, the maker said there is only 2-3 mm of thread in the insert. Quite easy for someone to cut there bolt 1mm shorter and only have 2mm inside the ss insert...

Have you used your 12.6 in the surf and specificly rolling it and hanging on when fallen in the water?

Im not knocking the product and think it a good idea. Just see a maybe weak point. Time will soon tell and it may be a non event.
