I read an interview with a stand up paddler named Whitney Guild and he has come up with rough guide to volume in SUP's.I reckon he is pretty spot on.

Simplified it is the riders weight x experience = volume

Beginners are weight x 2 = volume
Intermediates are weight x 1.7 = volume
Advanced are weight x 1.3 = volume

I weigh 84 kg and ride a 131 litre board.
So by this calculation I am sitting at 1.55
I could go down to a possible (84x1.3=) 109.2litres.
Where do you fit into this calculation?
Jason

105kg and ride a 130l board.

The design helps heaps wider tail and nose is more stable than thinned out designs of the same volume.

1.23 Hilly
Is the water over your feet all the time or just sometimes?
Do you think you could go less or maybe more?

Water on feet but I think the design could be thinner out a little to help wave riding.

Another theory from the zone admin:

Clothed rider weight + board weight + paddle weight + 20 L = minimum volume (all in Metric, of course).

not sure hes got it there im 71 kgs and on 98litres and 27.5 wide its bloody hard work staying upright and feet are lapping with water constanly. by his rule i could go down to 92litres man i would need a snorkel i recon. I also think widths place a big part on stableness.

add board weight, clothes and paddle I think you are spot on

it's not far off the mark, but it's a guide only. as mentioned other factors come into play

Hi Guys, back from Hols.

I'm 82kg, ride about 102 litres so that's board + paddle + body weight + clothes plus 10 Litres!!

Technically Dan, you could ride 92 liters if I can ride 102, just need to man up a bit

dont know the litres on my new stick

but at 92kg when i stop paddling the whole board is under even the nose and usually i can sink it half way up to my knees

sometimes i can paddle out of it but most time it's up periscope or dogman overboard

dan,my last was about 98 litres maybe less- 28 wide step rail. works out to about 1.225 at 80 kg's. it was too much for me. three days surfing in a row in average/poor conditions and i would be a very sore man.

i reckon when you start getting down towards 100 litres every bit of foam is critical.add in thin tails, rails and pulled in nose plan shapes too

i would like to know the dogmans newie is for litres and see what the ratio is

Yeah Lacey its hard work under 100 litres that for sure but it all pays off when your riding the wave

It's probably a reasonable guide, but volume's not everything.

I'm 87kg and ride 117L (1.34) and was previously riding 110L (1.26), but would hardly classify myself as 'advanced' compared to plenty of the guys out there.

It also depends on what style of surfing you enjoy - longboards style boards will usually have more volume, but that doesn't necessarily mean those riding them are less experienced.

With Christmas just passed I'm running at 86kg and my two smallest boards are both 99 litres. That makes my "Guild" ratio = 1.15.

My feet are always wet/underwater but paddling and hanging around out the back is quite doable.

hey casso, i think the slightly fuller noses on your newbies have got would give you back a bit.

that step rail i had would tilt and just disappear under the water like it never wanted to be seen again spent a lot of time prone paddling out of those swirly holes at the alley
