On the way back from the crap conditions down at Pt Leo, I stopped off at the Merricks General Store. When I was a teen it used to be a real general store and I'd always buy a hot sausage roll from one of the two hot teens who worked it. Nowadays it's an upmarket cafe that also operates as a cellar door. I was hoping to pick up a nice $15 bottle of Pino Grigio, but it turned out I was conned again and paid $25. Very nice drop though. Lisa was disgusted that I spent so much and won't let me buy anymore. She starts work tonight at 9:00pm - 3 hours to go.

Steinlager Classic. A great Polynesian drop, which gets the tick of approval from the Hawaiians ! Mainly because it's brewed in greater Polynesia, and tastes OK. I stock up when I see it at $40.

But for some reason I'm sitting here with a Sapporo Premium - Japan's Oldest.

Oliver, you didn't miss out on too much down here either. It was a touch wonky even before the SW came in.... but I missed it at it's prime, at 9am before the wind picked up, but it wasn't all time according to the reports anyway...

Yarra Valley Gold dark ale from Grand Ridge Brewery down in Gippsland. Really good winter beer.

Hey Oliver, I agree with you about the Merricks store. It used to be great and was run by three sisters (when they grew up a bit from being hot teens, to be hot 20 somethings). They used to get these home made sausage rolls which were really good...special recipe or something. It used to be particularly good to tuck into a few hot sausage rolls sitting round their wood heater after a good winter surf.

The story goes that the sisters took over the running of the store from the parents, but when dad died mum sold it out from under them, without them knowing.

Haven't been back there since. Heard it's overpriced and really yuppy.

I knew there was a story about the girls. Amongst my friends we always looked forward to the sausage rolls and flirting with the girls there after a surf. I'm still glad the place exists. I had an overpriced meal there last year in winter and had a bottle of that Pino Grigio. I'm not saying it was worth it but I did enjoy the meal and the wine. I was feeling a bit sorry for myself on the way home today so I thought I'd treat myself.

Mercury Dry Cider of all things. Hadn't had one in about 35 years until some punter left one in the fridge of the B and B the wife and I run. Hot day, scoffed it down and been hooked ever since, when having a civilised drink. If I'm off the leash it's Bourbon and Coke all the way.
Cheers

Ahh, Roscoe there were so many occasions when post surf you'd wander in to the Merricks General just to gaze at the middle sister...[oh and buy a pie and coffee].

I had the day off today and had planned to sup Second Reef, saw the SW wind change forecast and pulled the pin. Had an excellent kite session though.

Currently sipping a Rockbare/McClaren Vale Shiraz after a couple of Stella's which washed the saltwater down.

JD & Coke.

Goes really good with the "night time" cold and flu tablets I'm on at the moment.
I probably should be sleeping and not drinking to get rid of this crap flu I have.
Salt water should help over the W/E.

Hope you get over the flu Brendan...it's crap today - wet, cold and direct southerly so nothing within 3 hours drive of me that would be worth it. Good day to sleep in, chill and gobble those tablets. But looking better for tomorrow (maybe) and for sure on Monday, so I reckon we'll still get some waves this weekend. Cammo's interested too.

Hey Warwick, I totally agree with you about the middle sister.

It's the other end of the scale now, morning after the night before, although I was very modest last night, so no hangover - but speaking of which, just kicked my son and his girlfriend off the couch in the family room. Don't know what time they got in, but obviously they didn't make it to his bedroom.

Now it's time for my morning drug of choice - caffeine.

What's yours?

I admit to my caffeine addiction - can't do anything without two cups in the morning. I could give it up, but actually really enjoy my morning coffee so I figure, why not? I do limit it to 3, and never more than 4, cups a day, but even if I am up at, say, 4 or 5am for a dawn patrol can't go out the door without getting the Saeco coffee machine fired up. It's a serious business, so I get my beans from Cottle coffee near the South Melbourne market - espresso supreme blend. Great cuppa! Even when I lived in Adelaide for three years, if I was ever back in Melbourne on business I would always bring back some coffee from there.

Time to go make my second cup. Given it's such a crap surfing day, looks like it's the day to fire up the vacuum cleaner and do the big house clean up before my wife get's home from 2 months overseas. Might even have to venture into totally unknown territory and try to clean the oven. Any pointers much appreciated. lol.

Bet those of you who are into tea (I used to be) drink way more cups every day.
