Hey OG SUP, have you ever sufed Woolamai at Phillip Island? Big hollow beachie but ususally with huge deep channels so you could get out on a SUP.

Yeah Woolamai for sure - this is what appeared over the dunes the day I was down there in April...

No board

It is really hard to jump over the front of your board when your too deep on a SUP which means you get battered!

Oooh I wouldn't do that! Better to head towards the back (difficult for sure) or straight over the side at 45.

I can happily say Ive scored a few in my time mainly on a few dredging beachies at Queensie Steyne and DY. The most memorable was day was the day at Queensy when we did a demo prior to the branch nipper carnival. The whole corner was roped off for us .
The predicted 4' swell had jumped up to 6-8' (faced) glassy A-frames overnight - it was friggin insane with 3 of us having it to ourselves!
We had 20 mins to do our stuff, but they couldnt make up their minds wether to run the event or not so we got close to an hour out there! Towards the end as confidence built I took one right into shore where it was barreling, got a cover up and snapped my board (no, not a PSH or a Naish). Boohoo

You always get worked in the process and thats why I always look at Dogmans helmet and think -hmmm what a great idea! Trouble is in my experience its the body thats gets smashed - not the head. So far (touch wood).

As for the paddle - I have never thought about it in 2 years of surfing StandUP. At the most your only trimming inside and as long as the blade is behind your body, your sweet. IMO.

On another point, I read this once and have always done it ever since- using the paddle as a drogue whenever I go under a monster.
I get it in position (in front of me facing out back) and when the leggie PULLS I dig the blade in square to stop the pull. Almost pulled my leg off a couple of times but it stops you from being sucked into the worst of it and being drawn down deeper. It is a bit hard when you get rolled inside but on the wayout when you have time it works a treat! Anyone else use this or another technique?

One things for sure when that wall and lip lines up you are way better going for it than bailing!

I was told to always do it that way on a shortboard and have stayed in one piece. But considering the length of SUP thought it might get you in trouble. Off the back I could imagine would be OK but to the side would be suicide!

So you couldn't dive off the back so how does it work? Do you just kick the board forward and go in butt first? Do you go over the falls? Or can you somehow pop out the back?
