She was indeed Chrispy..

And done and dusted, this is all I could find so far

THERE is an Animal and a Midget, a Rabbit and a Raging Bull. There are dark horses and household names, and the odd bolt from the blue. A list of Australia's 10 most influential surfers (1963 to 2013), unveiled on Wednesday night at a special Surfing Australia awards ceremony, has provided a snapshot of and tribute to the country's surfing heritage.
''It's the first time we've done this,'' Surfing Australia CEO Andrew Stark said. ''It's the 50th anniversary of Surfing Australia this year, and so we thought it was important that we recognise the sport's legends and historic figures.''
Compiled via a public poll and votes provided by the 34 Australian Surfing Hall of Fame inductees, the list features some familiar names, including, in fifth spot, Bernard ''Midget'' Farrelly, who was Australia's first surfing world champion, and, in No. 1 spot, Mark Richards.
''MR is an obvious one,'' says Stark, ''not only because of his four world titles and his work with the twin fin but for the way he carried himself as a surfing ambassador and became a household name.''

In second place is Simon Anderson, the soft-spoken design guru whose invention of the Thruster (or three-finned surfboard) in 1980 proved a game-changer for modern surfing. ''Ninety per cent of the world's 10 million surfers ride Thrusters today,'' Stark says.
Then there's Robert ''Nat'' Young, aka ''The Animal'' (in third spot), a lanky, outspoken figure feted as much for his pioneering aggression as for his five books on surfing and surf culture.
Some names will be more familiar than others: Mark ''Raging Bull'' Occhilupo, for instance, who comes in at ninth. Seven-time women's world champion Layne Beachely also makes an appearance (at seven), as does Wayne ''Rabbit'' Bartholomew in eighth spot.

Surfing Australia will tonight unveil its 10 most influential figures of the past 50 years. Just out of interest did anyone here vote? Or know anything about it?

Who do you reckon??

In no particular order my selections are

Rabbit, Merchant, Occy, MR, Layne, Alan Green, Bob, Snowy, Nat, TC

Edit
Jeepers no MP in my list - who can I remove? Jeepers this is going to be hard!!! Sorry Mac but your man is be relegated to number 11 - sorry!!

Edit 2
No Simon Anderson - shame on me.....looks like Alan Green gets the boot now.

This thing is a nightmare!! I guess it will come down to the demographics of those that voted which would mean of lots of younger folk are voting then Joel and Mick may have a shot at the top 10 as well. Think I am about to give up

So here is the list

10 Bob McTavish
9 Mark Occhilupo
8 Wayne 'Rabbit' Bartholomew
7 Layne Beachley
6 Tom Carroll
5 Bernard 'Midget' Farrelly
4 Michael Petersen
3 Robert 'Nat' Young
2 Simon Anderson
1 Mark Richards.

So I lost Bob from my list (traded for MP) but otherwise I am pretty happy with my selections.....SP and Chrispy should get some reading lessons as it was "australian" selections......Snowy over Midget was a grave error though. For those that asked why I picked a certain G. Merchant it was based on the fact (and also saw A Green initially in my list) on the fact that it was stated as influential and I was a thinking that everyone would have been influenced by a bit of billabong kit in their time....yes I regret it now but once ( a while ago) I was - shame on me

I was close but had Kong and Jack McCoy

Kong for the generation of power surfing he inspired and McCoy for decades of unbelievable images

Occy and Bob McT got the nod over these two

I guess technically it was surfers not film makers but I played Bunyip Dreaming and Green Iguana until the tape wore out.

Same!!!!!!! Great movies.....the first movie I really had access to (did not have a video player or tv growing up) was Billabong Surf into Summer, followed by those 2 then onto the KS in B&W - those movies were played 100's of times.....these days I just do not get into surf flicks - probably because I still do not watch any TV unless its the news

You can get so much surfing content from internet that I am not that motivated to watch the old surf DVD.

Also am showing my age but the ones I watch get a bit repetitive pump down the line then some big spin over and over.

Also the list does ignore the past 15 years

I am sure the groms today would put Taj Parko and Mick in the list as most influentual on them.

If you were to work on numbers influenced then due to exponential growth in sport these three must have had a bigger impact on more surfers than most on the list.

I've been an Occy fan for over 20 years & met him down South a few times. Awesome bloke in & out of the water...he made a huge come back to win the title when he was like 33 & it motivated me to get my shiit together after a kidney operation. I would of been very surprised if Occy didn't make the list & I'm very happy he did. He's the first name I'd write down for one

The tittle didn't say "Australian" but i'm guessing it must be as there are many names missed if its international.

First and fore most for me if we are talking "Inspirational" Than Bethany Hamilton has to be a stand up winner..

All good points mate...I just think Occy influenced Australian surfing by surfing awesome...simple as that...his lay back cutty stalls under the lip to slot into the barrel were epic. I've seen him do it on 10 foot face waves over the surgeons table not once, but 3 times in the same session & that was just when I was paddling back out after a wave. And I've seen him do it on 2 foot waves at Triggs point back when the poor buggers had to surf it as part of the tour in the mid 80's...I don't know, maybe Peter Drouyn is far more famous over in Queensland than here. We're about the same age mate & I never heard much about the guy until recently.

why do they have to be short board riders to be influencial?

i know some on the lists rode longer boards in the day cause that was the thing

but what about our more recent successful longboarders? just sayin

mick pc, if you surf around d bar coolie etc you'll know why there are a lot that don't like him that much.

the media and especially the local media build him up to be this top bloke legend.

legend - certainly, top bloke - only if you don't really run into him or your one of his pro mates.

gold coast is full of ratbag surfers thou', shouldn't just pick on occy

hang on, maybe we should because he abuses his status

You don't go into any detail to explain why Gold Coasters may not like him so much, so I could only guess. But I won't...other than imagine things are different over there due to the person to wave ratio...going by my own experiences of when he's been in the line-up & other places I won't go into...at the end of the day, my opinion is mainly based upon judging him by his surfing. Since we're talking about "surfing". Not humanitarian volunteer work, not administration of the sport/hobby/lifestyle, taste in art, physical looks or surf movie background soundtrack...I like the way the guy surfed, big powerful cutties, off the tops & the way he put it all together. Without getting too controversial, I can appreciate the amazing stuff guys are doing today & I can think of many others with great styles. But Occy certainly did influence my life & I stand by what I said..wrote...cheers

as i said certainly a legend/great surfer. i'm happy for people to believe he's a top bloke. just don't like being told he's a top bloke by people who don't know him or of him or seen some of the crap behaviour.

i understand you have judged him by his surfing.

funny how if the media say something enough then its got to be true

cheers

I did some **** I'm not proud of when I was young 2

But well done number 1 MR, a more humble, nicer bloke you could hope to meet. Great representative for surfing, the worst thing you can say about him is he owned a Porsche
