Fin vs Foil Slalom racing - a few lessons and observations

He was definitely using them , check out the video

It helps for hanging off the sail in max upwind performance on those foils, and sometimes security when really booking it. Some prefer no rear straps for course races from what I've seen, but it just depends on the fuse setup and rider preference.

I think he was being sarcastic. Rear foot out of the strap was when he was crashing

Quicker out of the gybe than the bloke on fin and was using 1.5m smaller sail and going as fast, but a couple of thousand Euros(?) carbon foil under the board.

Closer to three but saved the 2-400 on the fin, the longer boom, the longer mast and the extra sail in the quiver.

Not sure that was actually Berowne's voice in the video or he's just dubbing in the Wilhelm scream now.

I predict the 85 slalom board and largest sails (10.0, 9.3) will be dropped by almost everyone. 9.0 sail for light winds on foil (and maybe 10.0 to help in really light wind days). but the real question is how many will ditch the medium slalom board, 8.4 and 7.7 sails? In favour of 7.0 and 6.0 sails.

Of course for this to be possible more than 2 foils would be needed.
if foil speeds keep progressing it might even be possible to run at Tenerife or sylt etc. but the swell might be a deciding factor
my question is. does a 70 wide foil board make sense for higher winds or is the 91 a good allrounder?


I know of at least some pros who-like Nico-will go *full foil* next year. Another pivotal moment.

Excellent. If they get to go to Sotovento and Sylt when its blowing hard it should make good viewing. I predict quite a bit of 'pivoting'

Haha good one, although in reality they hardly ever run slalom in Sylt when the wind/surf is up & onshore and instead run wave and/or freestyle. And of course Sylt has hosted plenty of foil racing before, both PWA and German Windsurf Tour. Sotavento is an interesting one, given the typical long first downwind leg and subsequent shorter legs into the outside chop; very different indeed from the Defi Wind Allstars conditions, but also another 6 odd months of development and training in between so who knows! Will be cool to watch either way :)

looks like it was at least 95% foil in croatia PWA. Goyard seems to have much more competition this year than last

Goyard also hit Vrieswijk and wrote his foil off, so lent him his. Very sporting. I guess that was elimination 6 from the results.
Before that he won the 1st 2 eliminations, then wasnt so dominant. The others are definitely improving now they have more experience with foils.

'Yesterday Amado Vrieswijk - NB20 got hit by Nicolas Goyard in a simple accident at PWA croatia just before the semi final race. The results were devastating with Amado' foil completely destroyed. Nico with an act of beautiful sportsmanship offered Amado his own board saying that since the accident was his fault, it's the list he can do. Seconds before the hit started they switched boards and Amado managed to race and qualify to the final. Nico sailed with the broken pieces to the beach and unfortunately missed the race.'



Collisions might result in more broken kit with foils, as there is more to break and foils can cause worse damage. I've seen pictures of foils imbedded approx 60cm into boards after a head on.

Sara Wennekes was dominant in the women's racing. Sifting through results, she was an RSX racer, 3rd Youth in 2013, and first raced in PWA slalom in 2021, 5th on fin and foil at the 1 event they had in Israel.

Matteo Iachino said in 8 eliminations he did just one heat with 7.8m & fin, semi final elim 8, and finished 4th. He was 3rd overall.
