I was thinking about my comments again, and after reading some other stuff here, I would like to add that while our cost of living has certainly gone up a lot in the last decade, I think that is largely because our standards have gone up a lot too.
I think Oz is expensive these days, but our standard of living is very high too, so I'm not really complaining.
Now, if only I could get some wind..........

I'd even pay a premium if we could get regular wind!

Flanagaj,

. Two big conglomerates own everything and hence can control the prices they pay farmers and prices they charge consumers.

There are 5 grocery chains listed in Australia's top 20 retailers. You can save money by shopping at Aldi if you can be bothered.

Inflation will increase due to the floods in the food bowl and the price of fruit and veg.

This will mean that the interest rates will most likely stay still or even go down as the cost of borrowing money will have to work to offset inflation.

This being the case Australians will borrow more money in the coming months spend more, whilst real estate costs will continue to rise.

The recent devastation in Queensland will supercharge the building sector which has been limping as there is enough work there to keep the builders busy for the next 3 years.

This will mean that our economy is set to grow even more over the next 3 years with the cost of living set to rise closely in tow.

Seriously?

Two problems with this.

The RBA puts interest rates up to try and control inflations (this has been said by others here before).

How does an economy benefit/grow from destroying things? The effect of natural desasters is always negetive in real terms to an economy. It may increase employment/stimulate some sectors but somebody has to pay for the damage, which means less money for other more productive uses. Or more debt.

You do realize that the majority of shops in that list are all owned by the two conglomerates?

No didn't realise that. How many competing grocery chains would you say there are? There are fair trading laws that you'd hope are being abided by.

Westfarmers = Coles, Coles Express Petrol, BI-LO, Liquorland, Vintage Cellars, 1st Choice Liquor, Pcik'n'Pay, Bunnings, Harris Technology, Office Works, Target, KMart, Kleenheat Gas, Westfarmers LPG + 50% stake in FlyBuys + other interests in Insurance and Industrial

Woolworths Limited = Woolworths, Woolworths Liquor (formerly Mac's Liquore in some states), Safeway, Safeway Liquore, Flemmings, Thomas Dux Grocer, Macro Wholeffods, BWS (Beer Wine Spirits) Liquore, Dan Murphy's Liquore stores, Caltex, Big W, Dick Smith, Tandy, Lowes Hardware + Everyday Rewards / money and mobile

As you can see, there isn't much left as far as grocery retails is concerned. According to Costco's Chief financial officer both Coles and Woolworths have been trying to hold up and block the opening of Costco shops in Australia by objecting council submitted plans for new stores. Apparently this was done via Coles / Woolys funded laywers. Something both companies denny but it was apparently done in the same way for the Melbourne location as well as the Sydney location. In the case of the Sydney location it took Costco 2 years to get council approval for the store.

As for fair trading laws, anyone that believes those are working probably also believes in the tooth fairy and Santa Claus. Just face it we live in a country driven by greed at any cost.

Right on Stehsegler.

The big end of town didn't get where it is by being fair and believing in competition. They get big by killing their opponents any way possible. There are numerous cases of the big supermarkets trying to kill their oponents through predatory pricing.

One famous example was a supermarket pricing bananas at 50 cents a Kg when the market price was double that in an attempt to draw customers away from the greengrocer next door.

The green grocer's response was to go in, buy all the bananas for sale and sell them in his shop for 51 cents a kg.

after some offline discussions with some people it seems to dawn on me that the situation in regards to cost of living doesn't seem to be as bad in other states such as WA and SA compared to NSW. Not sure if it has to do with the most incompetent state government in the history of the universe or the fact that every greedy f..cker has descended on this state... maybe it's something in the water???

Are you lot still crying about the cost of living in Oz??

Boo hoo, poor me, I hate living on the biggest f--ing island in the world, surrounded by the best surf in the world, where the sun shines all year round, and my massive plasma TV won't fit in my home which is a leg-rope's stretch from the beach, and I can't decide what side salad to go with my lobster, topped with fresh mango's, bananas, oranges (which are 50 cents more than what they pay in outer Mongolia!), and damned if I can pick whether to wash it down with a nice drop from the Barossa or Hunter Valley. Damn you all for forcing me to make such harsh choices in life!!

Jesus christ. Take a box of tissues with you on the way out, or grow a pair, shut the F up, and start talking about windsurfing again.

Anger issues?

BTW, I think this fall into the same category as the person complaining about too many GoPro videos... yeah I don't like them either... but don't like don't look.

It's more that it's regional.
Sydney is shocking, and so is Melborp and Bris. GC is pretty bad too, but varies a bby area. Somewhere like Coffs Harbour will be cheaper than Bris or the GC in Qld.
Townsville is expensive, but Cairns is pretty cheap. Noosa is expensive, but Bundy and Hervey Bay are much cheaper etc etc.
Basically, Oz is highly metro-centric, and that drives up teh COL in desirable areas, but as sson as you get more than 4 hrs away, teh COL starts to fall.

Not at all. quite the opposite acutally. Just found it quite humerous.
I guess there are those that p1ss and moan, and those that suck it up and get on with it. I fall into the latter category. Each to their own.

It's 2011, not 1950. You can no longer ride the bus to town, see the midday show at the theatre, get a bag of fairy floss and ride the bus home again and expect change from the 2 shiny shillings you got each week as pocket money for milking the cows for old aunt Doris.

However, nothing wrong with p1ssing and moaning about it if you back it up with a plan.
eg. Grow a vege garden (cheap food for yourself and/or sell them to your neighbours), run for government, start your own supermarket empire...to name a few.

What's your plan?

And hardly relevant using the Go-Pro thread comparison in reply to my post.
I have an opinion on this topic and I have stated it. Doesn't have to align with anyone elses.

no it's not 1950... but then again unlike some I don't still live in LaLa land with my parents but instead try and make a living on my own raising a family, not price gouging my clients and in general trying to be a nice compassionate person. So as far as my plan is concerned... it's called talking to people about issues, raising awareness and perhaps that way get people to make the right choice next time they go to the polls.

Other than that I vote with my feet... purchase everything work related as far as I can overseas (how come an order from New York city is 50% cheaper yet gets here quicker then when I order something from a store in Melbourne?), buy all my fruit/ vege/ bread/ meats direct from local producers and yes, I do grew my own herbs / veg where feasible. Sadly I am not allowed to drill for my own oil.

I do grew my own herbs

If you grow the right "herbs", then the cost of living will no longer be a problem for you.
