I recall that in the mid 80's taxes from tobacco were the major source of funding for our hospital system, so where do they get all the money from now?

Geez Rustbucket that really sucks man. Have you thought about suing for compensation in any way? Not to sound like I condone suing for the sake of it but yours sounds like a legitimate case of negligence on behalf of your employer. I'm also in a band and I am so thankful I am playing in an era of non smoking venues.

thanks rex...no..I really think they would be able to blame everything else.

man playing in a band with no smoke...great stuff.

I had been in so many bands since about 1978..quit a few when the smoke got too much in certain venues, always itching to get back,...am now..can still sing strongly [not fast stuff though] but am stuffed carrying any gear...even though I have very lightweight keyboard.Looking for a duo partner who sings great and is able to lug.

Ironically I reckon had I been a smoker perhaps I would have been ok now. Perhaps a tolerance. I also believe if venues had fitted airconditioning that sucked out smoke and replaced with clean air things would have been tolerable..but instead to keep electricity costs down they kept recycling the smoky air, but now it had been chopped up and infused every air space...the smoke itself usually kept near the punters..if removed it could have been different.

What ever...now musos can sing without ingesting copious amounts of smoke.

but back on topic...just came back from Rosebud, Vic, after picking up a landsailer and saw an area under Arthurs Seat go up [we were down on the bay,]...within minutes fire fighters had it out, although Elvis arrived [to shortly be ...Elvis is leaving the building],It seemed the fire was out before Elvis arrived..then within half an hour another fire within a short distance...very strange..was it arson or a lit cig.Was talking to our hosts who have said many spot fires on the grass around the highway are reported during summer.

Was going to visit a good friend in Yarra junction..but she had been evacuated 6 or more times in a few weeks...we decided to give her a miss so as not to have another car in the way..ironically she said that day was windless and beautiful...but of the Yarra valley..how many of these fires are man made or natural [lightning]...she has lived in fear every summer..I remember one year being on the phone to her most of one night [keeping her sane] while Elvis hovered within eyesight ..unfortunately then the locals were not told to evacuate, they were in limbo..this year after the biggy they were constantly told to evacuate...

this year she evacuated without question after the biggy, previous years she stayed as long as possible because she is a much exhibited artist.painter/sculptor, she is scared she will loose her lifes work to the fires nd her duty to her cats...This year she put the cats in a pet evacuation sanctury and just fled hoping her town will escape the fury.

how much of this horror is caused by accident, by arsons, by nature or by a lit cigerette ,we can eliminate the lit cig , so easily...use the ashtray or quit. One fire starter gone by smokers using common sense.

still a lot of cigs and alchocol sold, not to mention that we've been raped through property stamp duties, GST and myriad of other taxes we pay.

Good on you! We back onto kms of bush with a road running through it & I worry about butts being thrown.A few years ago in the 2003 drought where kms of bush died from lack of rain I was just behind some F..@#$# who was lighting little spot fires on the side of the said road.I put them all out.Unfortunately I didnt see him. Also in the same said drought someone had been letting off skyrockets from a lookout into the bush..I'd like to tie the bastards to a tree & set them alight.
I used to be a postie & I saw someone throw a butt out of a car when I was behind them at the lights. I rode up & picked it up & handed it to them through the window saying " I think this is yours..? " They looked really embarassed.Made be feel good , don't know if it did any good. and I don't think I'd do it these days as I'd be worried about being run over or something!
I just read the rest of the posts.I replied after reading the first as it pissed me off so much.Great to hear there are others out there doing something!Wish I could have been a fly on the wall when the lit butt went into the car!
