Sonic, if you cast your mind back to a SP trip a couple of years back you will realise you were in the presence of one well placed and qualified to assist you in matters such as the day you describe.
Good luck with your fishing for fishermen.

well md, good old hedgie (mark pederson) introduced us to windfishing,
and a noble sport it is!!!
have caught a couple of tuna myself off palmy reef, tho not of that heft (tasted good though)

and a large albatross
after i whispered in it's ear not to grab my lure again while i held it by the neck, it then took off and hovered above me for the next hour trying to poo on me! spooky huh!

I remember watching Hedgie trolling off Long Reef years ago before he disappeared into the wilds of FNQ.
He used to catch heaps of good size fish, used an old Mistral Equipe.
He had a shortened baseball bat to give them a good knock on the head and also to discourage the odd men in grey suits. He started doing it on Maui when he was competing.

Hey Kana, I went to his wedding couple of years ago up on the Central Coast. He moved up to Cairns to do his kite teaching awhile after that. I just recently heard he was working in the mines up Townsville way or somewhere inland. Dont know the area.
He had more talent than Ive had beers, (and thats a lot)

Hedgie the windfisherman.

Works as a soil analyst for a Darwin mining company.

Meg drives an 80t tipper.

He reckons the pay is better than he could make from windfishing.

Hey Shark

try these sites and see what you can get out of it !!!
www.msq.qld.gov.au/home/safety/personal_watercraft
www.jcu.edu.au/field/oirs/docs/boatrule.doc

i am trying to get to the nitty and gritty but it seems there are some diffs in international and gov acts & laws.

i'm no legal eagle but am willing to learn about the better safety for all who use the Broadwater at the Goldy !!!!
cheers

Back to the original reason for the topic...

I was a fisherman first, before even thinking about sailing. I've had a mate in a 'racing-cat' cut through my lines for a laugh, and I did, (seeing that he was also my employee!! swept floors for a week.) I guess I'm lucky where I live, but we live in a pretty easy-going area, and if I'm out on the board, I've noticed that the fishermen are more interested in what I'm up to (they always seem to take great interest and have a good laugh at an acropbatic catapult,)than catching fish. and I also have a tendency to admire skilled wind junkies when I'm out fishing....

I've heard of punch-ups between boaties trying to launch boats (Melb. area), and between w/surfrs stealing each other's waves...

Someone once quoted "why cant we all just get along???"

I think there's something in that for all of us. (or could it be the 12 beers talking?>)

There is no diffs in the Colregs (colision regulations), they are internationally accepted and ratified.
From memory comes first and foremost a vessel restricted by draft or manoevering (towing?)(must be showing correct dayshapes/lights)
then a vessel anchored or moored (this shouldnt be in an area covered by above)
then a vessel fishing (should also have lights/shapes up)
then a vessel sailing or otherwise non motorpowered.
then all else.
hope this clears it up a bit?
