Windsurfing off Dampier in WA many years ago when a huge black fin popped up about 10m in front of me. Went into a state of panic then another big fin appeared, same shape but white. realised it was a big manta ray. Panic subsided.

Windsurfing off Exmouth coast several years ago. Tide was a bit low so had to sail around the coral patches. Had my eye on what I thought was a patch of coral and preparing to take evasive action when the bloody think started moving upwind just as I was heading for it. Passed just in front of it in only 4ft of water. It was a big square headed tiger shark about 10 ft long. Fortunately I was heading to the beach - that was the end of windsurfing on that trip.

I found my self having to de-rig after the wind sunddenly dropped late in the afternnon and the current was taking me into the bay, seeing this my brother who had made it to the point before the wind dropped jumped on his board and paddled out.
He helped me seperate my mast and we began to paddle ashore, I looked at my hand which was still bleeding after i tore open a calis in a wipe out. Thats all we need is blood in the water i thought and suddenly this black what looked like a fin thrashed through the water about 5m from us and this big black object was coming straight for us.
What the f*!k is that as we sat up on our boards and grabbed the mast halves ready to fend it off.
But as it passed under us we were releived to see a manta ray.
Although after that we didnt hesitate in getting to shore.

Comrades
Lats week I sailing at Animal Bay... same beach featured in A Current Affair story on Great White Sharks just 100 metres or so off beach.
I sail out long way and then see many small bait fish in water with seagulls diving for food... water almost look like boiling.

As I gybe my boom head crack and come away from mast... I then in water some 600m off shore in middle of bait fish with no way for getting back to shore without some big swiming.
I must be getting in water and de- rig out haul.. reconnect boom and tie off with spare length of rope i keeping always on my harness bar.
This take about 6 minute with me treading water but try no kick legs too much.
I able to re-rig and get back to beach... no vodka no spare boom and no spare boardshorts so I must be emptying of the gold dust and then go home

Time to revive this topic!!!
I had an incident on Saturday that didn,t involve big fish or big waves , but it was scary none the same .
I was racing my Formula in a nice choppy 20 knots on Port Phillip . Screaming downwind to the bottom mark on Starboard tack I had the Oz and World Champ 14 ft Skiff coming at me full bore on port . Decision time , go around him or force him to gybe inside me . Stuff it , I,m racing , so I started screaming STARBOARD . He pulls off a perfect panic Gybe which puts me about a board lenght downwind of him and just a bit in front . S..t , theres no wind behind that 600 sq foot of sail area . I stop , he doesn,t !!!
Chrunch !!!!! A carbon fiber wing right in the middle of my back .F..k that hurt !!!! Then a huge amount of pain from my front foot which was stuck firmly in the strap . I was face down in the water and something had me pinned . Not sure what or why but I couldn,t get my foot out or twist around to get a descent breath of air .
S..t , I,m in trouble here . Then something grabs my foot and wrenches it out of the strap and I,m free . The forward hand of the 14 is in the water yelling , are you OK .
They had pretty much capsized on top of me and something had me pinned . Thank ch..st he saw I was in a spot of bother and helped .
The moral . If something bigger is bearing down on you forget racing rules , the rule of the jungle applies . Get out of the way !!!
Hopefully I,ll be off the crutches tommorrow .

Sounds nasty! I'll never claim right of way over supertankers, QM2, Botany Bay jet skis, and now skiffs...

i was sailing a old one design in about 86 in lake macqurie i looked upwind of me and there was a half cab power boat at full speed heading straight at me, i had just enough time to dive as deep as i could, the boat went straight over the board just missing me as i was only about 3 foot down, leaving a massive hole in the board where the prop cut from the deck to the bottom and right to the centerboard case, the impact snapped the center board and the prop slashed the luff sleave most of the way up, anyone who has sailed a one design will know when you sail them your foot is right where the boat had chopped into it, stoked to have my legs still. the worst thing is the guy driving was drunk as a bastard with his wife and kids in the boat and claimed he didn't see me, how you cant see a windsurfer sail is beyond me. still scares me when boats hook past at full speed, i usually abuse them.

hey sonic, I wasnt scared at all!

oh I get it, scary for others!

actually I think my scariest moment was sharing the water at the train with a guy wearing a helmet, really thick spectacles (coke bottle thick) who was tail walking his board across the broadwater in a 20 knot s/easter, I think you were there sonic, now that was scary!
