SUP: don't for general all-around windsurfing.

It's OK in waves in light wind, or teaching or social sailing. Actually fun.

But performance/planing: not really. Longboard freestyle: marginally (but fun though).

That's my take.

but, if you want to paddle, that you can put a sail on --- get a sup.

A side question: what are SUP like for for just surfing on small waves (no sail)? I would love to stick one in my boatshed for those occassional wavey bay days and seems like it would be a great way to get around on flat calm days.

I honestly can't be bothered arm paddling a surf board. I grew up paddling around on our 'original windsurfer' board when I was a kid and always enjoyed standing up to paddle. I still paddle on it in bay waves but it nose dives very easy coming down the wave due to zero rocker.

i got my sup for that, waves that wouldnt be much good for surfing, i think it works great for that. even if its really small, i just go out play around, good work out and fun. ive got the starboard 11 2, theres probably better ones for waves, and probably better ones for flat, but all around this one works well for me.

im sure itd be better than your old flatter windsurfer.
