eyeMhardcor has a point but my view is a bit different (ie. better).

Even if I'm way down wind of everyone, I can usually tell that I am going to get more out of the wave than anyone up wind. Just the vibe I get from most sailors. I'm not openly arrogant like eyeM, I just keep it to myself how good I am.

But I think what would really benefit everyone in terms of learning which waves to get and how to ride them would be if I am about to catch a wave, whether I'm upwind or downwind any people, if I suddenly decide to pull off the wave I will then shout out my intentions to do so. I think it would be polite and respectful if everyone let the wave go too. But then also, when I am getting a wave, I expect everyone to get off also. I know that sounds greedy but the bonus for them is that they get really good at picking the rare waves that I am not on. Therefore, their skill level goes up. Makes sense??

[qoute] CJW wrote - The incident: I was coming in on a wave, had been on said wave for probably 300m after jybing out the back sometime previous. Approaching the drop zone and working my way upwind on the wave, as everyone does at Gerroa another sailor catches the wave. This sailor had been 'stalling' near the drop zone. Being a curtious sailor, no problems I think i'll give him some room. Now a combination him wanting to head down the line and me waiting for it to form up bring us probably within 10m. A bit of a spray ensues from his quarter.

Just two questions for you CJ:

1) If you caught the wave first from way out the back how did the guy end closer to the peak ?

2) Did the guy speak with a German accent ?

Have you ever been to Gerroa? As I said before it's a pretty long beach and the break is not overly consistent. This generally leads to sailors being spread out over 2-300m all looking for the best part of the break at that particular time. During this particular instance I just happened to be further down the beach than this dude, likewise there were people further down the beach than me. There were also people further up than the aforementioned other sailor. Given these circumstance it's often difficult to apply the 'closer to the peak rule' as it's never consistent. That's why generally at Gerroa, from my understanding anyway, it's usually whoever was on the wave first who has some precedence. There are exceptions, eg both take off at the same time, then closer to the peak obviously has right of way etc.

Not a German.

Don't know if the fella's where talking serious when they said if there a better sailor just drop in, don't matter how good you sail if you get the wave it yours, how are you going to improve if these guys are sailing with you. i'd like to see these guys sail somewhere like maui where 99% of sailors are better than them, they wouldn't even get one wave. and what if the guy you keep on dropping in on is alot bigger and meaner once you see him back on the beach, no thanks, keep it real and show some manners guys. we should be encouraging people into the waves not scaring them off.
And the rule about the guy on the way out has right of way, it's so the guy heading out don't get smashed in the impact zone if he's plugging out, gives him some room to get over the waves if there isn't someone right in front of him.

Mambo Merimbula is a good place to drop in on someone.
Years ago at the nationals at Phillip Island in Victoria there were 15 people on the one wave. I was the furthest up wind and Greg "Grubby" Allaway was below me. Everyone was bearing off at the right time then when I turned Grubby decided to point back up wind. Bang he copped the nose of my board right in the ribs accidently of course. Damn thought I had killed him. So just be careful.

If he snaked your wave CJW do the same to him. They soon learn to show some respect.

I've had it happen a couple of times that I'm coming in, not on a wave or anything, and try to give way to someone coming out and they give way the same way... we do the "footpath shuffle", both of us changing course at the same time until we either figure it out or both stop with a confused look on our faces.

If you're going out, HOLD YOUR LINE!!

Makes it easier for dummies like me to avoid you

Does that over-ride the traditional sailing rule of starboard tack has right of way?

I can understand if you're trying to get out through a big break and there's only a limited amount of wave that you can hit to get through, but at other times, shouldn't the normal sailing rules: port/starboard and windward/leeward apply?

It does in W.A. mate . Starboard rule applies to flat water and out the back but not in the break.

Yes, same rules here, but Neb said he wasn't on a wave or anything, so perhaps that's where the confusion came from in this case.

Yes, in WA Starboards rule OK. Anyone not on a Starboard must give way to Starboard riders.

The BLASTERS IS BACK ..... B.I.T

Had a ripper collision 2 weeks back at ..........Coros.

Got caught CARVING upwind , back side.........

Old matey was a good 20m up wind.......

Between us was this sick hissing pit that needed to be slashed.......

I could see him frothing to bottom turn and wack the **** out of it.........

So i called him in .....I intending to go straight.......

I CHANGED MY MIND......As I thought there was no way he could make it ............

As i climbed hard up the face on me back hand .....he drove i all the way through on his forehand.

Made the Demo derby look lame.

Me mate cost me $50.........which was a cheap ding..... No hospital expenses or LTI.
