Ok, what's your smallest sail, and how often do you REALLY use it.

(Be honest )

I'll start. 4.7m: Never used, but just bought it this week because I was blown away last Sunday week on my 5.2m. Now I feel like such a pro having a sail that begins with '4-point'.

Regards,
Harrow.

4.0 used once every 5 years

It is an old Topsails wavewing that is in pretty damn good condition and i'm happy to keep a mylar sail for that size cause if things go wrong it will come out better than a film sail.

Harrow,

I can hold 5.7 in up to 33 knots.

In 22-40 knots I can sail with a 4.7.

I have a 4.0 which I never use.

In essence when I cannot hold the 4.7 (40+ knots - in chop) I cannot hold the board on the water so going any smaller in sail size is not an option.

So 4.7 is the smallest I use.

Sometimes it's better to just conceed defeat and watch those that for whatever reason are really talented in those conditions. I've had days watching guys sail and we were literally leaning out over the edge of the wall at Manly to stand up (as in fully committed if wind stopped we would have fallen on our heads). To sail in conditions like that you have to be either extremely crazy, talented, crazy, fit, crazy, switched on, crazy, have balls that'd put a prize brahaman bull to shame or completely bonkers- probably all of the above.

Biggest day i've ever sailed was probably constant 40 knots with gusts to 70+... it destroyed the annual wynnum manly spring parade. You havent lived unless you've had to cower under your sail in the middle of a bay until the fury passes . Got to be careful rigging on the big days too, i broke a mast on a similar day when as I was undoing outhaul wind swung and gusted picked up the sail with me still attached and flung us 15m across the carpark destroying the luff of my brand new sail (bloody murphy's law). This is why I dont kite.

Anyone know what happened to those windsurfing nutters that used to chase the cyclones around?

Been a pretty quiet year on the cyclone front and to think everyone was worried due to the heat of the water up north atm.

OK beat you all so far, I've got a 3.7 wave sail, and I have used it, at least once, just can't remember when!

ummm,

i would be one...

3.5m in 55+ knots. brings new meaning to the word chop hop...

the way to tell you need the 3.5 is that the car rocks from side to side while you are scoping out the spot.... that is the amount of wind where wave slot fins become very worth while. i've had the board spin out half way through a gybe and then the slot grips again.... love it.

Hi

I have a 4.5 and use it rarely. Some season I use it a bit others hardly at all. Of course I use it on a plastic HiFly 88l (narrow eqv to about 70l) board this way I keep the board on the water and aren't worried about damaging it.

One time at wellington point I had the board on the ground on the lee side of my car and the wind gusted and off it went across the carpark. not a good day.

3.5m Neil Pryde Combat Wave, circa early 90's !
Used many many times, mainly winter frontal sailing here in the West.
Don't need a big sail when the wind is big, you'll still go quick and fly with the birds on a smaller rig.
Great to be out enjoying it when most others sit at home in front of the fire. Soft Cox...

4.0 Neil Pryde combat, bought 2nd/hand in 1993.

Use it about 4 times per year.

Are modern small (<4.5) sails a bit improvement? I'd agree it's worth having modern large sails but don't see the need to update my 4.0 yet. Plus this sail rigs on a 430, so that's one mast for 4-5.7 sails.

4.2 06 Combat I have used 7 times this season so far.
My wife has a 3.5 and she has been out twice with it.
It's nice to know you can get out on the water after a long trip, even if it's howling!

Have a 3.5m which is primarily my partner's sail (she's 48kg). Used it twice, once in Sydney when it was gusting to 50 knots. The other time in Cervantes in about 33 knots. The interesting thing was that I was way more powered in Cervantes because the wind was so solid. I've never expereinced such a solid consistent wind, even in Maui.

I'm 62kg's and I use my 4.2m regularly. When it's 18 to 23 knots I use my 5m. Over 25 knot plus winds I have trouble hanging on to my 4.2m. I'm needing a 3.7m for those days over 25 knots but haven't got one yet as I'll have to buy a boom and mast to suit ($$$). When it's 15 knots I'm out on my 5.7m nicely powered up while everyone else is sitting on the beach or trying to get planning because they see me and don't realise I'm a feather weight

I'm talking about real 25 knots. We all tend to over estimate but to me 25 knots is fkn windy. Seriously it's fkn windy, and a 4.2m for my weight (and no muscles) is too big! There's only so much you can downhaul on a 4.2m Ezzy. Then when it's got the outhaul on it just looks like a flat sheet and the wind at 25 to 30 knots just hits it with no drive. A 3.7m in these winds with minimum downhaul would be a gem for me

you will find in that much wind, going a smaller sail with little tension can be worse than the bigger sail with more...you have battens popping in and out everywhere, and they are a **** to waterstart when full...maybe try moving your harness lines around so you arent using your back/front hand so much?..ye i know what you mean about a real 25knots, but when you have to sail state titles on a bloody flying ant in 33knots, windy takes a new meaning...haha

i can't seem to understand what is the problem. Over the last six saturdays we have about four that produced 25-35 in the open ocean. The only thing that held me back was the state of the water and the volume of board. With the Tush storm rigged right i had no problem. The only difficulty is encoutered when the wind gust from 30 - 10, that push pull feeling. Hook in and hang onnnnnn.

NO point being under powered

If you're talking 25 knots solid with maybe 30 gusts, agreed that's strong, but a modern 4.2 should still be OK at your weight. You can certainly flaten a sail too much, maybe you should let the outhaul of a tad. Or does that produce "negative outhaul". wouldn't expect that on an exy wave sail on the correct mast, maybe your mast is a bit soft in the middle????
I'm only 5kg heavier than you, and I'm comfortable wind wise with my Avalon 5.3 wave sail in 25 gusting to 30, (on TIGHT). My wife who is you're weight and 61 years old hangs on to her Avalon 5.0 wave sail to 25 knts. But not with 30knt gusts!!!!

Yes 25 knots gusting to 30 knots is bloody windy I think we all agree on that. With my Ezzy 4.2m (2004) I admit I use a 400 skinny, downhauled to the max, letting the outhaul off a tad does send it into the negative. Not being rude to anyone but I know what I'm comfortable with as I'm the one using the gear. In 25 knots gusting 30 knots I'm not comfortable on my 4.2m as I feel as though I'm out just to survive. Remember I'm not very strong. I windsurf with an older bloke than you decrepit and he weighs exactly the same as me and when it's over 25 knots he is on his 3.7m (2004) and very comfortable in the 30 knot gusts

Windsurfer,

Oh man, can I sympathise with you !!!! Yesterday on the bay it was gusting to 30+ and I was out with a 5.2m and hanging on for dear life, with the board touching the water about 50% of the time, and not really enjoying it at all. (Can you believe I left my new 4.7m at home)

Anyway, some guy asks what am I worried about, as he was using a 6.5m and it was fine. Then I find out that he weighs 120kg. Well I did the calc: 6.5m/120kg x 64kg = 3.5m, so I reckon I was doing bloody well to stay on the water.

Wish we sailed at the same location, then we'd both have someone to discuss rig sizes with. That's the great thing when there are a couple of girls out - they're not afraid to string up something smaller.

Regards,
Harrow.

Used a 3.6m once in a cyclone (not a huge one but still) in mauritius with one of these old really short boards where the mast track is nearly on the nose. Usually the place was quite a calm lagoon, protected by the reef but that time the swell was coming in real good!
The session lasted probably 45mins...

I think it really depends on what type of sailing you're doing. For example I can easily hang onto (well not easily but it's do-able) my 8.5 on my hypersonic in around 25kts. I only weight 63kg. But that said if i'm wave sailing at 25kts i'm definitely on a 4.7 and if it's gusting to 30ish i'll go to my 4.1 no worries. 4.1 is my smallest and i've used it probably 6 times this season on the east coast.

As wave sailing/freestyle is what I do most I tend to want to be just nicely powered as being overpowered whilst no problems in terms of hanging on makes tricks/riding waves difficult. If I purely did slalom i'd say the smallest sail i'd own would be a 5.5m or around there.

Agreed, wave sailing is a different ballgame, 5.3 up to 20kts, 4.7 up to 25kts, 25+kts I'm on my 4.2 for sure. 30+kts the 3.7 comes out

My smallest is a 4.2. Only seems to come out a couple of times a year when the Bureau posts a gale warning, or 30Kts+. Nothing worst than missing out on a big day for lack of small gear.
As to the rig big mentality, I love blitzing past someone who's on a heaps bigger sail. The word lard-arse springs to mind.

My other rule to pick a sail size is the rule of 70. 70 less wind speed in knots = sail size in m2. Eg. 70 less 25(knots)= 4.5m sail. Or 70 less 20 (knots) = 5.0 sail. Works for me.
My 4.2 is good from 28 knots up.
