yeah so can I, five of them are compound words ending in board. One of them is a compound word ending in surf.

Windsurfing FTW! Nuf said.

By that reasoning, wouldn't the sport of riding a windsurfer be Windsurfering?

Does anyone actually refer to their board alone as a windsurfer? Sad I know, but I am genuinely curious. Mmmm... semantics.

ahhh good ol Franny. They dont make em like that anymore. Eleven foot long, pink, solid as a rock, retractable centreboard. (fun girl) Then of course theres "Monique maui "and "Rachael Ride"... ....and, Isnt boogie board a name brand for a body board.??? Is the boogy man a nose picker??? If I take my body board to the disco could I still boogie(all night long)yessir? But what if I get boogie fever???(an uncontolable river of hot snot??) Why is a surf ski a ski?? All these questions and yet questionable certainy in all things.

It could be but fortunately in English we can remove one suffix and replace it with another, in this case we remove the er and replace with ing.

If I see a sail on its own I would refer to it as a sail. If I see a board on its own I would refer to it as a board. However if the board and sail come together then by a mental leap I refer to it as a windsurfer.

Even though my father is German and I can speak a bit of German I find English is a pleasant but imprecise language in that a pleasant idea such as surfing the wind can be used to create the word windsurfer.

Thats what its all about, the idea of surfing with the wind. How great is that?

I have a car, but when I'm driving it I'm not "carring", I'm driving.

To me its windsurfing, and windsurfers, and I go sailing (if the wind ever comes back).

Scenario - Laying in front of you on the ground are several different boards.

1. a kite board
2. a skate board
3. a snow board
4. a wake board
5. a boogie board
6. a sail board

Now describe the sport performed on each board

1. Kiteboarding
2. Skateboarding
3. snowboarding
4. wakeboarding
5. boogieboarding
6. windsurfing

Can you pick the odd one out

Note: I intentionally left out surf board to avoid controversy because I'm yet to meet anyone who goes surfboarding

Hmmmmm... I'm sure he must be wrong,... but the logic is compelling.

Nope! Definitely wrong!
Because I don't have a snowboard or a wakeboard or a skateboard, so if you remove these three, the remaining number is not large enough to be statistically significant.

Its wrong because the first rule of the English language is there is always an exception to the rule.

In this case the exception is the exceptional sport of windsurfing, surfing the wind.

sail·board [seyl-bawrd, -bohrd]
1. a long board, usually of Plexiglas, used for windsurfing, having a mount for a sail, a daggerboard, and a small skeg.
2. a small, flat, single-masted sailboat, usually having no cockpit.

Aha, a daggerboard!!!

wind·surf·ing
–noun
a form of sailing in which a flexible sail, free to move in any direction, is mounted on a surfboard and the craft guided by the standing rider.

Also called sailboarding, windsailing.

A noun?
What the...? Windsailing???

wind·sail·ing
–noun
windsurfing.

Another noun??? Stupid american dictionary (www.dictionary.com)

It's just too good for one name. Like sex

Yes, boogieboarding because it is for losers!

(anyway, it should be bodyboarding - they could be having the same debate)

A colleague just walked past and said 'I see it's windy today I suppose you'll be leaving early to go sailboarding'

To which I replied "yes"

But then I thought, I'm not a sailboarder I'm a windsurfer.

Windsurfing damn it!
I'm a Windsurfer who is going Windsurfing, I called as he walked away.

Thanks guys, I feel validated

sometimes eskimos wake up to find themselves adrift on a piece of ice that has broken off from land. In this situation they hang their parka on a spear, and using the wind, make their way back to safety. They call this "floe blowing".......

For some strange reason, the name of a former Premier of Queensland comes (no pun intended, initially at least) to mind. Can't quite work out why.

Hey!.. Yes, I've finally worked it out.

Kiteboarding is a Gay sport. (not that there's anything wrong with that.)
Whereas all the others are for everybody.
