Decrepit knows how to make an indestructible board, there's always a cost factor though, which will be weight

well its not quite as bad as your bad days. but my dad smashes his nose to bits every time he uses his jp wave. but i think his upto count number 6 or 7 now. just on saturday he had a good session, and he took his board out no worries, and than when he was washing it of he picked it up to turn over and it got slammed into the tap so there 'was' a big hole in the nose..

Hi monster,
sorry to hear your story.

i am sure the few custom shapers in australia could build a board that lasts and won't break.

the other thing may be to get a board you can repair easy.

i have custom boards. (all of em) last year i removed the tail of my custom formula board. ripped it completely off when i ran a ground on a bottom turn sailing in small waves. lots of forces with a 70cm fin i guess.

anyways, i took it back to the shaper and he glued the tail back on. the board is now 6 years old and still going strong and it's been hammered.

a month or so aga i dropped my wave board on some rocks carrying it up the beach. it barely even got a scratch. it is very strong and made to last. but it's about a kilo heavier than a production board. (doesn't bother me). also it's got hardcore foam. so if i ever manage to somehow crack it, it won't soak in water.

that said, there are some very impressive local sailors using production freestyle boards. (Hi hairy) they complete numerous loops backward thingies etc and don't damage their gear. so it's possible.

Can sympathise with you monster. I weigh in at around the 112kg mark and have had some problems, however I found the more time I spend on the water the less injuries and damages I make. I find an Ezzy sail to be a good tough sail (given that I usually sail overpowered) and my boards...no advice on which ones to buy, just work on your technique and try to sail lighter. Hard to describe this technique as I am no expert, however, a lot of it comes down to body postiioning on the board. It helps explain the phenomenen that two identical weight people can be using exactly the same gear, yet one will plane earlier and go faster. The old TOW(time on water) theory - practice!! Try changing your stance and technique.

As for the Witchcraft boards. I met the owner a couple of years ago up in Exmouth while he tried out a few of his new designs. Apparently lives in Canary Islands where the conditions can get hairy. His boards looked great and he swore by Ezzy Sails. The only problem I could see with his boards is that he charges big $$$$ for them.

All the best.

I 'neary' bought a witchcraft in 1997..

I went in the shop and he did the 'hammer' test and the 'staircase test'

First he bashed the sh#t out of one with a hammer then got the board, turned it on its side, swung the board over his head and whacked the rail against the concrete steps leading into the shop.
...I was only after a pair of harness lines...
Not really an enjoyable thing to watch but the lack of damage was astounding.
They weighed no more than your average board.

And to expel the myth of Fuerte, the wave sailing is no better there than in WA. Though the spots work in summer AND winter.

The summer winds are nowhere near as predictable as Perth.
The weather, however, is wonderful all year round and the Spanish girls are just as wonderful. The laid back, non violent all-ages-welcome atmosphere makes going out at night great fun.

Bad day sailing huh ?
Last year me and my mate had a sicky and went to lano for the day.It was perfect 3qtr mast high and the wind was pumping.
After an hour or so of massive backy,s and sick waves i got cocky and hit a large wave went into something like a stalled pushie and came down hard... popped my shoulder out of its socket! ouch!!! I was trying to wack it back in when a massive wall of white water hit me and popped it back in.Luckly i was able to water start and sail back in.Twenty minutes later my mate walked up the beach (after a long swim)with half a sail, half a mast and a busted boom. Karma for the sicky aye..lolololo
But still i reckon it was the best session of the season even tho it was only an hour our so.
cheers

Dinged boards 4 times in 3 sails + the batton on a sail. One of them was dinged each time but we reckon we had been making the repair to thin so we fixed that up this time. Hopefully its all good now havnt been sailing since. Dad reckons its to cold in the winter but i reckon it would be alright. Looking forward to it and hopefully dont wreck to much more gear.

Yeah OK I'll follow the hijacker. Jihad, allah, mohammed, jihad.

First times I sailed Esperance.
Winter: mast hi and hollow as, 30kn cross shore. Big stuff up on my part, gear washed in then a rip formed and I got stuck in it. Waves pushing me in (well, mostly under and a bit in towards shore!!) but rip sucking me out.
After 20mins I drowned. I was so close to dying I still cannot believe I am alive. Like, literally cannot believe it.

Oh yeah, gear damage. Then 3 months later in summer, first sails at 9 Mile (legend spot). First day, mast. Second day, mast. Third day, boom. No masts or booms left, onto VISA we go.
4 days respite then the seabreeze is back in. 1st day, new mast.

Now 4 years later, got 9 mile dialed in (well almost). First proepr wavesail last summer, tried and aeril into upwind 360 thingo on a knee hi wave, broken bone and 3 ligaments in my left ankle. Missed whole season and have sailed twice in the following 6 months.
Does an ankle count as 'kit'???

Hi monster, here is a link to the construction options that NXS -(previously manta sailboards) in QLD use.

http://www.manta-sailboards.com.au/process.asp

the website is under construction so it doesn't list his full range of boards.

a couple of other things is that pete lays up his own fin boxes. after failure years ago from particular brands he was using he now makes his own and they are tuff.

well it wasn't bad, just annoying but still ads to this post. i get out to crazies (first time with good wind conditions too) strait after school, im in a rush so i don't warm up my legs, which i have to do or i get bad cramps... its a b!tch getting out and with my lack of tacking skill, i fall off and have to swim the sail around, after that i was going good, got out to the sand bar, few jumps on the way than i nose land one and being hooked in i get flung, to make it worse im in the breaking zone im trying to keep the board and sails position rite, untill i get a good water start, with no crashing waves, and i get the worst cramp i have had in a long time. so five minutes later im still in the water, stretching it as much as i can and it goes away to a slite pain. so i get up and just as i hit a nice plane i go to attempt another jump on a nice formed lip, but im not even one second late and it crashes, (well crazies crash. not quite a proper crash ). im off again. decide to go back into sure, to go get my booties on, so i turn around, water start fine, and than im in the straps planing, aproching a nice little wave to play on on my way in,. and i get another ****ing cramp!!!, this time in the other leg, so im struggling my way in with two cramped calves, and the choppy conditions with a board with way to much volume didnt help. as i get to sure, my dad comes down to, what i thought, to help me get my rig up. but he instead tells me that he has broking my 2nd faverout 5.4 wave sail, and its not worth fixing[broken battern, monfilm torn up, and the mast sleeve. so this means that instead of getting my 5.0 super freak i will be getting a 5.3. (wich is still a nice size, just wont get as much use for waves, maby free style once i start doing that) and than once im on the sure, i have a look at my board to make sure i didn't break it when i got flung, but instead i discover a big dent, and a big patch of my paint job missing. luckily no cracks in the acutall board, because it was in a place i had rinforced in previose repair, but still hurts when you have put so much time into a paint job.
so that sucked. but when i wasnt cramping and i was hitting a few nice ramps it was good,.. but that was probaly no more than 20 minutes in total.
so one hour of sailing turned out to be more like 20 minutes of sailing and 40 minutes of pain

Jordo totally off topic but anyway:

How come you get cramps? Most leg cramps are caused by lack of water (dehydration) and / or lack of some salts.

No insult but most young people drink nothing but Coke and Red Bull and other crap all day, with maybe a glass of water in the morning. Are you drinking min 1 litre or water a day even in winter? 1.5L min in summer I reckon.
Or an electrolyte replacement if you are really not drinking much?

Just wondering if you have tried a few things cos it is not normal to get cramps that bad if you don't warm up, and also I know what it feels like to not be able to swim anymore in real waves and dead is not cool man.

yeah im drinking alot of water, i have a 1leater bottle i refill 2 times a day but today i left it at home so i didnt drink much. but the main reason is because im going through a "big" growth spirt i wake up at night with them, and it horible. i thnk i have grown 2 inches in 9 days. we used to think it was dehydration, but i started drinking lots, and it did nothing so the only thing that stops it really is stretching them out befor i go. its pretty weird, but my dad apparently went through the same thing at my age, and both my sisters did with thier dancing.

(1) yeah I read once that "growing pains" were not an old wive's tale... ppl would not grow for months and then grow like an inch in one night.

(2) you have sisters who are tall dancers? Are they single?
