Fully aware of everything you've said Windwarrior... my point is that your quote above leads to the impression that you can't take windsurf boards anymore, which is wrong.
I also think you just had a poor experience with a check-in counter who was having a bad day. For example, ten days ago I flew Perth to Melbourne with a 23-24kg board bag and another 13kg bag.... in economy, with Qantas. Qantas Club gave me the extra allowance to 33kg, but I still checked in with approx 37kg with no problems at all.
