Look at the price for a top of the line wettie nowadays. Not much change out of $700

[edit] Ripcurl H-Bomb 2/2 $1500

Not so sure about that,
Just got a brand new Billabong SG5 4/3 yesterday (rrp $589),
for $149 at DFO Moorabin, yesterday.
-It's got the solar panels!! gets great reviews and is in direct competition with the Ripcurl E-Bomb.

-can't wait to try it.

I went and checked these specials out and bought myself a new suit as well. Beach Culture and Rip Curl shops have stuff. Can retire my old holey suit now

Baywave Bill has also availed himself of the generosity shown by Beach Culture at DFO and snagged himself a Billabong SG5.

That's where these forums work well.

Hmm, I just went back looking for the original pic in the forums, it appears to have been erased. Must have gotten a little too "racy" for sea breeze......

brought full 5mm suit from U.K. where we'd break the ice on the lake edge to get in over winter, made for diving in the North sea.

2 good tips if v.cold:

- wear washing up gloves tucked into your sleeves, water gets in but keeps windchill off

- rubber swimcap under helmet !

Hey

If you really want to stay warm in winter, you need to move here to FIJI, where the water is 29 degrees and the Winds are about 20-25 knots.

Lovely conditions, come up and play!

At another thread, someone said the sail boarding season was finished - and no-one appeared to challenge that. Good to see many responses here show people do windsurf in winter.

Like the hot water in bottles in the esky with a towel. Must also remember that for kayak rolling sessions or canyoning on rainy days.

I wear a long-sleeze cag with latex neck and wrist seals, over the top of the wetsuit, or sometimes underneath, if I am wearing a farmer john.
Here is another, selling for $55 in Sydney;

Also a short-sleeve cag for $162;

It seems funny to me that anyone would make a comment that sailboarding is over for the year due to winter. Why, does the wind stop? Does their board and gear, lake or ocean dissapear? If anyone loves what they do (be it wind surfing, surfing, kayaking, base jumping or whatever) the passion doesn't end just because things get a little less comfy. Harden up and get out there! Bring on the powerful cold winter fronts I say!!

As for keeping warm. Just wear a steamer and vest, and make a hot cuppa when you get out. Too easy.

Had a look at the quiksliver cypher heated vest the other day

http://www.quiksilver.com.au/cypher-ps-heat-vest-system-6?default=7021
Quite a neat system with two carbon kidney heat pads powered by a sealed battery pack.
Lasts for 2 Hrs on high setting.
Info a little sparse on lifespan of battery and cost of a replacement.
$299 better spent on a good suit?

I'm amazed at the stuff produced today. How soft are we spose to become?? In years gone by people used jumpers to keep warm when surfing in winter. Heck, I know one bloke who only wears Spedos when diving in the guts of winter-stays out 3 hours in 15 deg water. Too cold for me, but anyone can grab a used steamer for about $60 off Ebay. These new fangled gimicks only make your wallet empty and people soft.

Phil,

I was one of the people who learned to surf in the middle of winter, using a footy jumper. They didn't keep you warm and became incredibly heavy when wet, so you had to be careful if you lost your board (this was before leg ropes) and faced a long swim in.
I was one of the first local surfers to get a real wettie and I can tell you, I prefer the wettie!

There used to be an old Russian woman who swam almost every morning at Brighton Beach and she used to swim naked. Melbourne in winter with water at 8 deg. C was probably quite warm for her.

Winter is upon us once again, but instead of letting its icy breath interrupt your life, conquer the freezing temperatures with these tips are:

1: Install a Programmable Thermostat
2: Insulate Outlets and Switches
3: Winterize Your Body to Stay Fit and Healthy

How many Watts this scam device can pull over? 1 to 5 - 10 max ? I guess. IN such case your smatphone will be equally efficient and cheaper.
You add this to your own 200-500W heat generated.
Electric personal heating is not bad idea but when you have access to substantial energy bank or generator -
that possibly not happen soon to swimming gear.
Still possible to create small and portable heater if you have access to radioactive material but don't worry much about lead protective layer.

It makes better financial sense to buy a $350 wetsuit to keep you very warm and then go to work the next day to earn some coin. My Neil Pryde wetsuit kept me very warm yesterday in those cold southerlies and cool lake water.

However if I ever come into money, ie a long lost uncle leaves me a few million dollars and block of flats in Manhatten, then sure I'll spend my winters over there.

eg: ebay has 2.8Ah @ 11.1v => gives you about 30W @ 200g for about $20. Buy two (60W), one for front and back! And it is against your skin, not heating a room.

Or you can use a sodium acetate heat-pack, for the same price and weight.

What about poor old me, I do most of my sailing during winter, for 20 years now and never ever in a wetsuit

Why has no one commiserated?

What do you wear in summer? Something in a stainless steel mesh or something that won't cause the crocs indigestion?

As for divers I can see no problem. Instead of lead weights they could take their car battery for diving in freezing waters.
Strangely enough Cypher advertisements carefully omits the output power.
If they use your batter pack as you said over 2 hours that is 15 Watts.
If they really want to impress they should use Peltier module instead of carbon heater.

Windsurf wetsuits have a looser cut around the chest and upper arms so you have more freedom of movement where we need it, and they have no lycra on the outside of the neoprene. The lycra makes the suit more durable but holds water which cools the suit when you are standing up in the wind.

That might be right, my windsurf wetsuit was very warm and comfy but only lasted one winter before the seams split. And I was reasonably careful with it.

Went into the local surf shop explained my problem and the lady fitted me out with an "O'Neil Psycho II". Beware, there is an art to getting into fully stretchy wetsuits. I had to be rescued from the fitting room. I'll shop there again.

She said it will last 2 years if I don't look after it and 10 if I do. Looking at the way the seams are constructed I think she's right.

With a bit of practice I've now mastered getting in and out of it. There's another use for those little black plastic bags available at the doggie beach. Doesn't take any longer than rigging a race sail.
