leper111 North was doing this type of thing years ago, yes they were flextip masts but i think they broke just like every other mast. Provided the sails are designed around the mast it makes little difference whether they are constant curve or not.

The point wasnt about race masts it was about masts and heat, that being possible fatigue if rigged while hot... this applies to both wave and race masts but you probably dont think about it whilst swimming home.

Strangely most of the race masts i've seen break are in similar spot to wave masts that die from rinsing, possible leverage point in sails maybe???

bring back the alloy mast bring back the wooden mast who needs perforamce . it breaks you weld it . it snaps you nail it bring back triangle sails and throw those batterens away
and please, please bring back the plastic boards with rubber fins and dagger boards. they are still as good as they where 20 yrs ago
and by the power invested in me by god and all the board builders out there ii 'll take away all the breakages .welcome to the world of high speed none planing

So why not make masts that have some of the bend built in?
Obviously you couldn't build all the bend in otherwise it wouldn't stretch the sail nice and tight, but perhaps just a bit of bend would mean you could make it just that little bit stronger...

That'd look interesting, pulling two big black bananas out of the car and rigging up...

Would make getting those d**n cams in a lot easier

Cheers Nebbian.
I played around with pre-bent masts in the early days.
They worked well but rigging was problematic.

After lashing on the boom following downhaul,
outhauling had an annoying habit of twisting the mast on the Y axis.
That isn't a problem when a mast is cylindrical or conical.(normal)
However, when a mast is pre-bent,
the outside edges of the curves (luff pocket to mast bend) lose coincidence.
To solve that problem so the curves agreed following outhaul tensioning,
I would compensate a little when downhauling with a slight twist of the mast to the left or right.

Hey elmo. I been alright, unfortunately not doing enough sailing... Work, Uni and weather not co-operating. First sail in 4 months was last tuesday.

Its harder than I remember and I only just stopped hurting haha. Hope to get down to avalon or gearies this winter some time hopefully catch up with ya then.

Hows the speed sailing going?

Back to masts, I want to buy a 370 section to turn my 430 ezzy rdm into a 4m rdm so I can use it will smaller sails without buying a whole new mast. Which section should I buy? top or bottom? And will the sails handle alright?
