Slave's thread has started quite a controversy hasn't it??
I'd like to get away from the personal attacks and explore this concept a bit.
Firstly was Jason & Robert both towed in any way????? or was the ski just taking photos???
How would you go about towing a windsurfer any way???
Try and waterstart/uphaul with the tow rope in your mouth??
From the look of Jason's sequence it was blowing off shore, and he was certainly using the rig.
If it's blowing off shore and a bit light, it can be hard to get on the wave, but plenty of power once you're riding it.
If they were towing is this why???

Plenty of questions, any answers???

Ive seen on DVD the tow-in principal and in a magazine and it looks quite difficult but these blokes are pro's..they hold the tow rope with their front arm and hold the boom with their back arm and it looks bloody hard..**** knows how they get out of the water..maybe like wakeboarders or something...also remember Polakow uses a 4.7 with a tiny board when most are using a 5.4 at hookipa...he's a pro and a skillfull bastard..so that little bit of wind at tahiti was probably enough to pump onto a wave..I just cant believe how crazy the bastard is.

If there was any wind, it was light at best.

Not enough to achieve sufficient boardspeed to penetrate the Chopes drop.

Hence the jet-skis to tow-in the poleys and bring them up to speed.

Thanks peto, so now we know they were towed in.

I'm wondering now about how much power was in the sails.
I know from experience that the more off shore it gets, the more power there is on the wave.
But I've only light wind wave sailed in side-on, found the useful minimum wind about 12 knts, lower than that and the sail starts to become a wind brake.
But how much does the power on the wave increase as it swings off shore?? I have a feeling that once it gets to off-side-off, it would be very hard to pick a wave up, at the minimum useful windsped on the wave.

There's also the updraft generated by the wave, if there's say 5 knots off shore, how strong is the wind at the top of a mast high wave. I have a feeling there's enough to get plenty of air!! (if you know what you're doing). Use gravity to drop down the wave, use updraft to get back up.

(A skip to a light fantasy here, -- If you have a good enough glide ratio, you could get air off the lip, then ride the updraught, perhaps that's what Jason is experimenting with)

I can just imagine the reaction from surfers if this catches on, imagine tow in windsurfers at Margarets when it's 5 knts off shore.

Here's a novel idea.

Why don't you WINDsurf when there's sailable wind?

You know, it just might catch on.

That's my point!
What is a sailable wind, (once on the wave) if it's blowing light off shore??????

Question:

Do you want to turn windsurfing into a team sport? (The jet-ski driver being the other half of the team).

I really don't mind how they got in. This stuff is incredible.

But on this shot you can see Polakow pulling out and there does not seem to be a jet ski

However on the news they did show Roberto being towed.

Did anyone answer Fil Am request for video.... or did the thread just decend into a slanging match?

JP and levi siver has sailed this wave before. It is on his last video, but they did have more wind but still very offshore. You can see on tim mc's photos that robert was towing in with "no" wind. why! because that's what he does for kicks.

I doubt JP was towed in on the photo where he is kicking out behind the surfer, as the ski would have token out the surfer to the right and stuffed up the surfer to the left. More likely he drifted into the line-up with too light a wind to get in the right spot.

doesn't really matter cause the photos look amazing regardless.

yeah the JP pic linked does look like there is some wind there.. if you look at the water..
and why would you tow into a wave that someone else was on.. and then give way..

and waveslave is crap

Although I didn't want to attack him any further I still want to say that I don't understand why waveslave has such a problem with this whole thing...
Anyway to go back to decrepit's point, a sail is designed as a wing, if there is sufficient airflow around it, it will generate lift (not vertically of course but sort of horizontally) or power if you prefer, so the initial speed is provided by the jet-ski to get on the wave. Then, just as for a surfer the wave will push the dude and there will be more airflow around the sail.
It is NOT slowing him down, in fact it will be as if there was wind!
When you're usually riding in windy conditions, the wind gets you going and supports your movement, but you are moving forward as well and in the end the windspeed relative to yourself is less... see what I mean? kinda hard to explain.
Earlier this year I saw a sequence of some dude being towed on flat water by a jet-ski at full speed to hit some boat's wake (wave behind the boat), and do a perfect forward loop, hence for this to be possible, there HAS TO BE heaps of POWER IN THE SAIL!
And for the question of wether we want to turn windsurfing into a team sport, why not? They'r doing it with surfing! And we've all used surfboards behind a jet-ski or a boat for skurf, just to have some fun! I do not see anything wrong with that, and it doesn't appear to be a disgrace to surfing (the sport in general).
One thing is for sure, if I was that good and had the possibility to do some tow-in, I would do half of the day surfing, and the other half windsurfing, because it's gotta be awesome! look at the pictures!
Allright I think I'm done here, every one's got his opinion and has the right to dislike the idea.
Regards

Yousurf,
Kite bettys and all the hand-holding turns my stomach with the kite scene.
It's not my style man.

I came to kiting from a surfing/wavesailing background.
Independant solo sports. (or used to be).

And Rosey,
I'm sorry to hear about your sister.

wave snake you just don't know when enough is enough do you?

As for you not being interested in the 'kite bettys and all the hand holding' that goes on with kiters around your area... I have it on pretty good authority that you're just as disliked amongst kiters as you are in this forum.

Provide some photo evidence that you can actually do any of things you are so quick to shoot down and you might gain an ounce of credibility...

Step up or step off little man

Back to the topic at hand, and the fact these guys are willing to take on one of, if not the, heaviest waves in the world is nothing short of awesome. It seems to be all about pushing the limit and then taking it a step or three further.
Little wind, no wind, tow in, sail in... how they got there is all relative.
What they did when they got there is what counts.

There would only be a handfull of guys in the world capable of committing to and pulling off what JP & RT did.
Hat's off to em... and lets see more of it

Kremlin,
Without wishing to blow my own trumpet....
and at your request...
You may find a photo of me in a past issue of Freesail mag.
2004, spring issue I think.

So if you buy Freesail, have a look thru your stack if you're so obsessed by my image.
It was a piece on Mandurah, I'm featured in a small photo boosting high above my local pointbreak,
looking down on the poleys.

By the way, what happened to that mag?
Is it dead?

Yes Mr Slave......... from what I have seen of your last few posts, you do indeed seem to enjoy "solo sports". One handed manouvres, if you get my drift.

Sorry decrepit I know you started a new thread to "get away from the personal attacks" but Mr Slave has had to jump in and make an ass of himself yet again.
